MuscleMaster.com, Inc. (”MuscleMaster.com”) just announced that it is conducting a voluntary nationwide recall of all lots and expiration dates of 17 dietary supplements sold between June 1, 2009 and November 17, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.

FDA informed MuscleMaster.com that it believes that the recalled supplements contain ingredients that are steroids. Specifically, the agency advised MuscleMaster.com of its concern that the recalled products may contain ingredients currently classified, or the FDA believes should be classified, as steroids: “Superdrol,” “Madol,” “Tren,” “Androstenedione,” and/or “Turinabol.” MuscleMaster.com cannot independently confirm the FDA’s concerns, that any one or more of the Recalled Products, in fact, contain these ingredients.

The FDA notes that acute liver injury is known to be a possible harmful effect of using steroid-containing products. Steroids may also cause other serious long-term adverse health consequences in men, women, and children, such as shrinkage of the testes and male infertility; masculinization of women; breast enlargement in males; short stature in children; a higher predilection to misuse other drugs and alcohol; adverse effects on blood lipid levels; and increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

Marko Martinez looks pretty fit for any age, but for a man of 67, his physique is off the charts.

It’s also hard to miss, since he’s fond of running shirtless along the Dallas Road waterfront no matter what the weather. He’ll also pump out push-ups on the beach and even hit the winter waves for a swim.

Martinez said he used to compete internationally as a kickboxer. But after taking on a more sedentary lifestyle and packing on the pounds, he decided about two years ago that it was time to shed some of the baggage from his 5-foot-5 frame. So he started running and working out. Did he ever.

“I had too much weight — I couldn’t even tie my shoes,” said the gung-ho James Bay resident. “Then I told my friend ‘It’s all over.’ I threw the booze and everything away and started working out. In 10 months exactly, 120 pounds I lost.”

Now the muscular Martinez works out daily, three to four hours a day or more. He’s an oh-so-trim 140 pounds, and recently won his division at a bodybuilding competition.

Running, especially sprinting up and down the many sets of stairs to the Dallas Road beach areas, is only part of the routine that made it possible.

“I go to the Crystal Pool,” Martinez said. “You’ve got the heavy bag over there, you’ve got the weights, you’ve got everything. The secret of losing weight is just keep moving and training.”

He also finds time to work as a paralegal.

“I’ve got a beautiful life,” said Martinez, a Victoria resident off-and-on for the past 40 years. He said he has also run a karate club in Vancouver, and taught kickboxing in Nanaimo.

Doing what he does rain or shine, night or day, can lead to some head-scratching from people who see him, he said.

“Every night they see me walking around with my shorts and they think I’m on drugs or something. They said, ‘This guy’s crazy.’ In the middle of the night, I’m walking around in my shorts doing shadow-boxing.”

The simple explanation is that he doesn’t feel the cold, Martinez said.

“It’s a state of mind. I do transcendental meditation. It’s actually that the knowledge of reality is derived from the inner soul, not from objective experience — in simple words, the cold is an illusion because in my mind it’s nice and warm.

“What I’m trying to do is to go with the flow, with nature.”

A cystic fibrosis sufferer is hoping he can inspire others with the condition when he achieves a unique feat next year.

Jonny Simpson, who lives in Foster Street in Penrith, is in training to become the first cystic fibrosis sufferer in Europe to take part in a bodybuilding competition when he enters a national tournament in Manchester next year.

The 22-year-old will break new ground for sufferers of the genetic condition, which affects the mucous glands in the lungs, and if he is successful could go on to take part in a Europe-wide event.

He said: “A few years ago I wasn’t in the best of health and decided I had to sort my health out. I joined a gym and started jujitsu.

“I want to show people that anything is possible, and raise awareness of cystic fibrosis. It can be depressing growing up with CF – in this county we don’t even have an adult clinic. But 10 years ago, if I had seen somebody doing what I am doing, I might have lived my life very differently. It would have been a good kick up the backside.

“Some doctors don’t really fill you with much hope. If I had said I was going to take up bodybuilding they would have found it hard not to laugh, but I have more or less doubled my lung capacity and put two-thirds of my starting weight on.”

Now, former Queen Elizabeth Grammar School pupil Jonny will enter the junior category of the National Athletics Corporation’s Manchester bodybuilding championships in May feeling ready to take on the world.

“Five years ago this wouldn’t have happened, and I’m very lucky to have the chance to get on stage and compete,” he said.

“I would love to think I could win, and I’m going to give it everything. I have to be in amazing shape but I wouldn’t enter if I didn’t think I had a chance.”

Jonny is also setting up a website for cystic fibrosis sufferers in the hope of helping other sufferers realise they are not alone and can fulfil their ambitions.

The Twinsburg Parks and Recreation Department announces the inaugural Twinsburg Duathlon, scheduled for June 6, 2010, beginning at the Twinsburg Fitness Center. The duathlon will be a U.S.A. Triathlon-sanctioned event that will consist of a 2-mile run, 10-mile bike and 2-mile run, all within Twinsburg’s city limits.

Cowboys Stadium, home of America’s Team, will also be home to America’s Run.

The event’s organizers envision a family-friendly fitness weekend, April 9-11, culminating with a half-marathon, a 5K and a postrace concert at the new stadium in Arlington.

The races will finish on the field with the gigantic video boards capturing finishers in high definition. In addition to the featured Sunday races, there will be a kids’ fun run and FitFest on Saturday. Packet pickup and a fitness expo will begin at noon Friday and close at 5 p.m. Saturday .

Entrepreneur Spence Kendrick, who founded The Ticket radio station in 1994, and Matt and Don Lucas, president and chairman of the run specialty chain of stores, Luke’s Locker, have teamed to form Endurance Sports Partners Capital, LLC. They’ve partnered with Cowboys Stadium for this event.

Kendrick initially had the idea for a race at the new stadium. His son plays on the same lacrosse team as Stephen Jones’ son. Kendrick proposed the idea to Jones, who helped make it a reality, Kendrick said.

The race is scheduled on the same day as longtime race producer Lewis George’s Big D Texas Marathon, which also includes a half marathon and 5K, at the Cotton Bowl.

Matt Lucas said the date for America’s Run was chosen 18 months ago based on the stadium’s availability, and they weren’t aware of conflicts at that time. Also, having the races in Arlington taps into a different base of runners, he said.

Lucas and Kendrick said their Sunday races are capped at 20,000 participants. They envision drawing runners locally and nationally. They also expect to attract people who are not traditional runners but want to check out the stadium in a different setting.

Registration for the 5K is $30 through Jan. 31, $40 Feb. 1-April 8. The half marathon costs $100 through Jan. 31. Then, the fee rises to $125, which is more than the Dec. 13 MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon is charging for the full marathon at next week’s expo. In contrast, the Big D Texas’ half marathon fee is $50 through Jan. 15, $60 Jan. 16 through April 5 and $70 through race day.

“It’s expensive to operate Cowboys Stadium,” said Matt Lucas. “It costs a lot to turn the lights on, pay for security and operate the video board. We want to make sure we put on a first-class event and make sure we cover the cost of finishing inside the stadium. The pricing is set in order to do that.”

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA (BRAIN)—Show organizers are researching the possibility of co-locating the Health and Fitness Business Expo (HFB) at the Sands Convention Center during Interbike.

HFB’s parent company Nielsen Business Media, which also puts on Interbike, Action Sports Retailer and Outdoor Retailer, saw a sharp decline in both attendance and exhibitors at last August’s show, prompting organizers to consider a change to the show’s date and location.

“We drew about 200 shops to the show,” said show director Andy Tompkins, down from 335 shops in 2008. “There used to be approximately 1,500 specialty businesses in this industry not too long ago, but the base is shrinking and when the specialty retailer numbers fall, the industry show reflects that.”

Tompkins, who also heads up ASR and Interbike, said HFB has seen a downward trend in retail participation over the last five years—from 519 shops in 2005 to the couple hundred that attended this year—something he attributes to market consolidation and a steady decrease in the number of specialty stores serving that market.

Furthermore, the option to move the show to late September alongside Interbike was the most favored among health and fitness manufacturers Nielsen polled in November, Tompkins said. Other alternatives included creating a stand-alone hotel-based show or co-locating with Outdoor Retailer.

“We want to serve that market so we’re trying to find a logical solution with a viable future that provides the exhibitors with more value,” Tompkins said. “This is a good alternative for the health and fitness community to still have a show and a place to meet as an industry.”

Though the September timeframe is somewhat late for most new product introductions for fitness manufacturers, HFB should still attract a larger number of retailers due to crossover between the cycling and fitness markets, Tompkins said.

“We drew about 4,200 unique buying businesses to Interbike in 2009 and about 1,200 indicated that they sell fitness products,” Tompkins said. “That’s why we think there’s some synergy here.”

Tompkins said HFB will remain a separate, stand-alone show even if housed at the Sands and likely won’t occupy the same show floor as Interbike. In addition, Nielsen plans to continue to offer educational seminars specific to fitness retailers and possibly put on an after-hours event that would bring together members of the cycling and fitness industries.

INBF/WNBF Sanctioned Fitness Camp & Posing Seminar
Don’t miss out on the upcoming INBF/WNBF Sanctioned Fitness Camp.

Several WNBF Figure and Bodybuilding pros will be there presenting and Revolutionary Technology Nutrition will be the event sponsor. There will be plenty of free giveaways and raffles. This is an all day event with tons of seminars, posing classes and training segments.The date is Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 10:00 am 4:00 pm. at New Dance Studios located in Rye Brook, New York.

The cost is $150.00 (if you sign up early, receive a $25.00 discount)

Janet Marsico, Official WNBF/INBF Figure Stage Coach and WNBF 2008 Pro World Figure Champion, Owner of The Figure Workshop to present Figure, Best Body, and Ms. Fit Body and now Bodybuilding posing as well as the Rules, Regulations for all four categories (we will have a surprise WNBF Pro women’s bodybuilder to assist for this one!!!). I will also be raffling off to an official Figure Workshop signature outfit worth over $100.00 to two of our participants!!!

Jim Cordova, WNBF Pro Bodybuilder, WNBF World Bodybuilding Champion (and if I listed the rest of the titles the whole page would be taken up here!!) will be here to cover his training and nutrition tips, know how and amazing seminar on some great inside tips of his. If you’ve ever seen one of his seminars, you do not want to miss this!!!

Kelly Reighard, WNBF Figure Pro and Ms. Fit Body winner will be here helping in the Figure and Ms. Fit Body posing!!

Ana DeCastro, WNBF Pro Figure Competitor and Overall 2008 World Best Body Champion will be here to cover Best Body posing and some great tips of the inside world of competing!!!

INBF Naturalmania Ms. Fit Body champ Karen Rix will be with us assisting me with the Ms. Fit Body posing (I like to ask some of our INBF girls to help me once in a while so they get a feel of our Camps)!!

Elise Firestone, Owner of Cosmetic Artistry (and also a Best Body Naturalmania winner!!) will be here covering hair, make-up, tanning and a whole lot more during a segment of the seminar!!! She will also be raffling off a very special gift so you won’t want to miss out!!
