He excels at the fine art of natural bodybuilding
Adam Colorado has no idea who he’s flexing against.
Such is the blind-date beauty of entering a drug-free, size-isn’t-everything, natural bodybuilding event.
“You never know,” said the 20-year-old Kitchener man, a three-year veteran of the body sculpting sport. “Anybody could show up on any given day.”
Colorado, who trains for 20 weeks prior to competition day, showed up and finished second in junior-age events in Toronto, Mississauga and Montreal in April.
The former Grand River high school basketball player still shoots hoops for Fanshawe College in London, where he studies fine arts.
One day, he wants to be an art teacher and a personal trainer.
By 28, he aims to be a natural professional just like his bodybuilding idol Layne Norton.
Five years ago, he was just an overweight kid fed up with being picked on by bullies and ignored by girls. With encouragement from friends, he started pumping iron.
Colorado, who is five feet 10 inches tall and 200 pounds, aims to go mile-high in a sport where drugs and steroids are forbidden. All competitors are tested.
“That’s the route I wanted to go from Day 1,” he said.
“Naturally, the body looks a lot better. There are no short cuts, just hard work and dedication instead of the chemistry lab sort of thing.”
At competitions, Colorado steps into a mystery lineup of the rippled naturals and poses before a panel of four or five judges.
Judges ask competitors to hold particular poses while they examine their muscle matter.
“They judge you on muscularity, conditioning, symmetry,” Colorado said.
“You can’t have a big upper body with no legs. You have to look ideal.”
Everything must look in proper proportion, Colorado explained.
Colorado trains six days a week for competitions. He’ll work on a particular body part for an one hour each day. During the school year, he gets up as early as 5 a.m.
He eats six times a day, every three hours.
He’ll pack on some weight this summer because he’ll trim down fast when he starts training. Last summer, his off-season weight was 210. He competed recently at 190.
“Natural bodybuilders usually have one show a year. That’s their Super Bowl. To do three shows in a year, like I did, that’s pretty ridiculous.”
Colorado isn’t sure when he’ll compete next year.
“I’m always keeping my eyes open.”
