2009 NGA Alabama Natural Open Bodybuilding, Figure and Fitness Model Championships - Pro Qualifier: Results

Forty-eight outstanding men and women athletes vied for Neils Andersen Sculptured trophies at Saturday’s 2009 NGA Alabama Natural Open Bodybuilding, Figure and Fitness Model Championships at a sold-out Hoover High School venue in Birmingham, Alabama.

The crowd enthusiastically supported the contestants who came from Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Pennsylvania and Alabama to compete for three NGA Pro Cards in Open Figure, Men’s Masters and Open Bodybuilding.

To a person, the athletes were pleased with the setting, the pump up area, the treats and the goodie bags, which were supplied by Muscletology, an Alabama based supplement company and filled with tee shirts, hats, a pair of Gripad workout gloves and supplements.  All of the competitors said they would come back next year for the 2010 NGA Alabama Natural Open Championships.

Three NGA Pro Cards were awarded:

Angia Baker of Tuscaloosa, Alabama won the Figure Tall Class and went on to capture the Open Figure Overall

Timothy Holder of Birmingham, Alabama captured the Masters 50+ title and won the Masters Overall.  Tim’s posing routine impressed the judges enough for them to award him the show’s Best Poser Trophy.

Merren sees off visitors – naturally

The recent natural bodybuilding show organised by Tiger Wilson attracted some of the biggest international names in the women’s game to Cayman.

On Saturday 20 June the Lions Centre came alive when the Cayman Islands hosted the Universe Muscle Classic Bodybuilding & Figure Championships.

Countries represented on stage in the fight for the coveted titles included the USA, Canada, England, Dominica Republic, Jamaica, Nigeria and the Cayman Islands. It should be noted that all athletes who participated in the event were subjected to drug testing.

The Boy Scouts opened the event with a presentation of the flags of the various countries that were represented at the event, followed by the presentation of the Cayman Islands flag.

The Scouts also displayed their talent with an impressive rendition by the drum corps and a marching routine.

Opening remarks were made by Susan Wilson, president of the Cayman Islands Natural Bodybuilding Powerlifting and Weightlifting Association. Local musician, Osbert Smith, then took to the stage and entertained the crowd with two of his latest hits.

First up were the Pro Figure competitors. The well toned and balanced physique of Sue Merren from the Cayman Islands earned her a first place finish, followed closely by Yenny Polanco representing Dominican Republic in second and Tracy Barlow from the USA in third.

Merren gave special thanks to Tiger and Susan Wilson for their hard work and dedication to natural bodybuilding and figure.

Merren said: “As hosts of the NANBF/IFPA event, they have given local competitors the opportunity to compete at an international level right here in Cayman. It was really exciting to compete against other pro figure competitors from other countries, and even more exciting to win first place.”

In the amateur figure class, Clair Adams, representing the UK, displayed her well balanced shape and refined physique and placed first while Kimberly Bowen who displayed good symmetry came second with Susanne Clements of the Cayman Islands, displaying her well toned physique, rounded out the top three.

Adams also walked away with a pro card and is now eligible to compete at the professional level.

Adams said: “Having worked so hard to achieve the results needed to take part in the show this year I was overwhelmed with my win.

“I am very proud to have taken part in the show and glad to have met all the other competitors who took part. I will be looking forward to taking part in any further shows on the island and wish to extend a special thanks to Dale Morris, Michael Salmon and to all those who have helped and supported me in achieving my goal.”

The lone entry in the amateur woman’s bodybuilding class was Susanne Clements who displayed great muscle.

Moving on to the pro women’s building, these ladies showed the spectators what a pro natural woman bodybuilder should look like.

Displaying great symmetry, combined with a well balanced physique would earn Christina Comparator of Ohio, USA the victory.

Melanie Tydrich of Wisconsin, USA came in very hard and despite her strong challenge Comparator edged her into a second place finish with Sherri Pilotti of North Carolina placing a close third.

Tydrich said that although she has done many bodybuilding competitions in the past, Tiger and Susan Wilson’s pro championships in the Cayman Islands has become her favourite place to compete.

“Tiger and Susan make extraordinary efforts to help the competitors provide their best performances for the audience, and the audience always responds with their uniquely Cayman warmth and enthusiasm that makes the competitors feel more than rewarded for our efforts.

“This was the second show that I have done in the Cayman Islands, and the experience was first–class in every respect. My deepest thanks go out to Tiger and Susan as well as all of the wonderful co–competitors and the audience that turned out to support us.”

“This was definitely the best championships that we have promoted so far,” said Susan Wilson who, with husband Tiger has been bringing the IFPA/NANBF Universe Muscle Classic Championships to the Cayman Islands annnually. This was their seventh year of promoting these championships.

Tiger said: “The quality of competitors for this year’s event was superb and it was indeed a pleasure to have them competing here in Grand Cayman. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, without whom this event would not have been possible.”

Sponsors for the event included PricewaterhouseCoopers, C.I. Department of Tourism, Chris Johnson Association, Ministry of Sports, Webster’s Tours, Island Paving, Western Union, Hot 104.1FM, Vibe 98.9FM, Radio Cayman 89.9FM, Andy’s Rent–A–Car and Body Sculptor Fitness Center.

Immediately after the intermission, fitness star, Yenny Polanco, did a guest posing routine in which she demonstrated a high energy fitness routine that consisted of a combination of rope jumping, gymnastics and aerobics.

Her routine was amazing and, judging by the reaction of the crowd, it was no doubt that it was thoroughly enjoyed.

Polanco said: “The crowd was great and I loved entertaining them. The show was an overall success and I met some great people. I would like to thank everyone involved in coordinating the show.”

Tiger also added his thanks to those who were at the championship for supporting the Cayman Islands Under–23 national football team by purchasing the food and drinks that they were selling in an effort to raise funds to assist them to travel to Cleveland, Ohio to particulate in a tournament.

Bodybuilding show a B-I-G success at AHS

Azle’s organizer of the Body Exchange Lone Star State Championship lauded area drug-free bodybuilders. Koan Bice said, “I am amazed at how well the locals did in this show. These were some of the best natural bodybuilders that I have ever seen.”

Plenty of Azle competitors placed, including one who picked up $250 scholarship honoring popular Azle athlete Seth Darnell who died of cancer in 2007 and an APD officer who took a new award.

Brock Boren, an Azle incoming senior, claimed one of those Darnell scholarships. He won the 17-and-under bodybuilding class.

Azle PD officer David Poe took the inaugural American Hero Class $250 appreciation scholarship as he picked up two silver medals.

Fellow officer, detective Richard Martinez took second in the American Hero Class.

The men’s over 40 division was especially competitive, Bice said.

Robert Seals, who dropped 60 pounds while training, won the silver, Ron Seaglequest took the bronze, and Martinez finished fourth in “a very rough masters class,” Koan said.

The other Darnell scholarship went to Springtown graduate Thomas Gibson who won the junior men’s class.

Another Porcupine, Zach Dollar, took the gold in the novice division; he lost over 120 pounds while getting in shape to compete.

Local women fared well, too.

Azle residents who placed included: Amy Tiller (gold, junior masters and open); Denise Latta (gold masters, second open); Hannah Cox (gold teen bodybuilding); Stacie Mathis (gold, silver, and 4th); April Taylor (gold, women’s open bodybuilding); and 52-year-old Sandra Kidd (gold, bronze, and 5th).

Koan noted, “People placing third and fourth at this show would have easily won most natural shows.”

Craig’s building on success

ALFORD bodybuilder Craig Nicol has been crowned teenage Scottish champion.

The 17-year-old former Alford Academy pupil who is studying fitness, health and exercise at college in Aberdeen, won the Under 20s category in the British Natural Bodybuilding Foundation ( BNBF) competition held in front of 600 people at the SECC in Glasgow. This was the first time Craig had entered a bodybuilding competition and this week he was still celebrating his success. He has been training and eating a strict diet for the past two and a half years. He had planned on competing in the BNBF Scottish Championships for about a year.

Craig said: “My diet started 17 weeks out from the show. You want your body to be as muscular as possible with as little fat, to show off the definition of your physique. I carefully constructed a diet plan that I would be following, based on a moderate fat, low carb, high protein approach.”

“I ate seven meals a day, including tuna, chicken, salmon, oats, sweet potatoes, wholemeal bread, brown rice, peanut butter and vegetable, and measured everything.”

” For the last five weeks of my preparation, the only source of carbohydrates that I ate were oats, sweet potatoes and vegetables.”

“The sacrifices I made in the 17 weeks were quite tough. The first eight weeks were not so bad but for the last six I had no energy to do anything other than train and eat. I got up, had breakfast, made all my meals for the day, trained, then just zombied though the rest of the day. My girlfriend, Saoirse, supported me and always gave me motivation to keep on the diet when I was finding it hard.”

“Winning the competition and getting a big trophy is great. Having a body like I do is also good, but it’ s about much more than that. It’s about the challenge, and the rewards you get that make it worthwhile. Bodybuilding is my hobby and my passion and has taught me how to set a goal and let nothing get in my way of achieving it - not just bodybuilding but in everything I do.

“If you want something, if you work hard enough, you will get it. That’s what bodybuilding has taught me.”

Craig will take part in the BNBF national finals in October.

LA Muscle Bodybuilder Godfrey Onyac Wins INBF Heavyweight Title

Godfrey Onyac a bodybuilder from West London has just returned to the UK after competing and winning the heavyweight title at the INBF Championships- an international competition for natural bodybuilder that took place in Barbados on June 20th.

Ugandan born Godfrey played for the Wycombe Wanderers Under 15’s team as a teenager but his football career was short lived after he was injured with a broken ankle. He was then influenced by a fellow gym goer to get involved with weight training and after gaining sponsorship from leading sports nutrition specialists LA Muscle began competing in bodybuilding competitions in 2005.  His first competition was the BNBF Southern qualifier and he placed 3rd in the Novice category.   He then placed 1st in the NPA Southern qualifier and the same again at the NPA British Finals 2005.

In 2008 Godfrey competed in the INBF in New York, USA where he placed 2nd in the Heavyweights category so it’s needless to say that he was over the moon with his result this year!

Quigley wins 1st

Just a few weeks after he dove into the ocean of competition, Josh Quigley has traversed the English Channel of accomplishment.

Displaying the skills and body-building sculpting to which he has dedicated himself for several months, the former Bartlesville High Bruin football warrior seized first place last weekend in an Arkansas showing contest.

He emerged as the champion in the “tall” category in the novice division of the North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation (NANBF) showdown in Bentonville.

Quigley also placed second overall in the open division.

“I was definitely more confident in my routine and in the poses and in my body,” said the 145-pound Quigley, who experienced his first engagement in front of the judges during a Tulsa meet earlier this month.

Quigley said he may not go to any more competitions this year, but is considering stepping up next year to try to get his pro card.

Quigley, who works at the Family Life Center at the First Baptist Church in Bartlesville, said he wants to encourage others — particularly young people — to “stay healthy without drugs.”

Beginning next month, he will begin a training program revolving around nutrition, cardio-vascular exercise and weight or resistance training.

The training, which will take place on Mondays during lunch hour, will be more formal starting in August, he added.

For more information, contact the Family Life Center at 336-6172.

Keri Graham delighted with BNBF performance

A CHAFFORD mum is through to the finals of a major bodybuilding competition.

Fitness enthusiast Keri Graham nearly won the Southern heat of the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation figure competition.

She was placed second in the event held at Bognor Regis. And her finishing position means she’s booked her place in the finals in the autumn.

Keri, a dance teacher who’s lived in the borough for more than 10 years, had only trained for the event for three weeks before entering.

Her second place came as a big surprise to the 39-year-old mum.

She said: “I was beaten by Debbie Francis, but she’s been competing for a long time and I only decided to take part three weeks ago.

“I train at Ballantynes heath and fitness centre at Chafford Hundred and have always kept myself fit — usually training about three or four times a week. But once I made up my mind and decided to enter the competition I had to change this and I trained every day.

“I stepped up my training and cut out the carbs. It was all about training to keep muscle and lose any fat,” she said.

Keri teaches at primary schools for Dancemode which is based in South Ockendon.

Her favourite style of dance is street, and the dancing workouts have obviously helped the woman pose and go through the exhaustive routine needed to score hightly in the competition.

She’s now through to the British finals in October in Glasgow.

Keri was supported on her big day in Bognor by husband Gary and son Callum, eight, a pupil at Tudor Court as well as best friend Sarah Hutchinson.

2009 FAME East Natural Competition Results

April 18, 2009

Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Presented by Mike Clement

The 2009 Fame East was a complete success. On behalf of Jeff and Mindy we want to congratulate everyone who participated. The athletes were truly amazing, the camaraderie backstage was second to none. Also a big thank you to the audience who supported all the athletes!

Here’s just a quick recap of the actual contest placings. Please add your photos, stories and memories here!

* All Athletes – Just stepping on stage after months of dieting, sacrifice and effort is a victory in itself.! This makes you all winners!
Most Amazing Accomplishment of the Night!!!!!

* Andrea Herault – Andre Herault placed 3rd in the Muscle Model Female (open) division. Her accomplishment is incredible as Andrea transformation that occurred over 8 weeks is nothing less than extraordinary. Andrea’s reasons for competing were to help her cope and overcome the stress of her beautiful 12 yr old son Jeriah being diagnosed with cancer. The most amazing news of all is thatJeriah is now in remission and is healing. Please check out her profile on Bodyproud.com and see the one of the most amazing transformations that we have ever seen!!!!
First Place:

* Genevieve Brodeur- 1st place in Fitness Model Search (Open) . Statuesque with a perfectly sculpted physique. She really impressed in the theme wear round with a Lara Croft look that was spectacular. Her great crossover physique also got her 2nd place in the Swimwear Search (open). We hope to see her at the Fame World Championships.

* Vicky D’Aguilar 1st place in Figure (Open/Masters). Vicky captivated the judges with her fantastic stage presence and incredible muscularity. The judges felt she was tailored made for the figure division.

One of the night’s big winners and fan favourites was Curt earning himself 1st place in both the Bodybuilding Novice Division and the Muscle Model Search (open). The female audience obviously liked Curt and his great muscularity. Also, of note was the very cool Eagle tattoo on Curt’s back.
* Kevin Goddard – Very original! Kevin’s been trying at this for quite a few years and his persistence paid off. With a nonstop smile onstage and very original mailman theme wear walkout Kevin locked down 1st place in the Muscle Model Search (advanced). Congratulation Kevin, it’s been a long road and your work paid off.

Top Runners Up

Marilyne Meunier – 1st Runner up in both Female Fitness Model (Open) and Female Muscle Model (Open) divisions. There is so much that can be said for stunning blonde who came so close in both divisions. Incredibly marketable with a great smile and presence coupled with an awesome physique! The judges struggled with deciding these divisions!

Adam Colorado - Coming in very close to 1st place as 1st runner up in Junior Bodybuilding, Adam who used to be picked on as a child, decided he needed to step it up and improve his confidence. Enter the magical world of natural bodybuilding! Adam showed great size, amazing lats and a lot of charisma on stage. No longer overweight or the focus of bullies, Adam explains he now competes because it’s “all about personal pride!”.

Isabelle Rochon – The judge’s reaction when she walked out was “WOW! What a smile and what a walk!” This girl knows how to bring it and she brought it. Isabel was a close 2nd in the Female Fitness Model (Advanced) division.

Jean Paul Tessier – Always a crowd favourite. Jean Paul locked down 2nd place in the Male Grandmasters (open) division with his Mass with Class. In his 70s Jean Paul displayed his experience with his always entertaining posing skills.

Eric Thifault – Enthralling the audience with his fireman theme wear and incredibly muscled physique Eric captured 2nd in the Muscle Model Male (open) division. He was a definite favourite with the ladies who were ready to cry “Fire!”.

Costa Zervos – Talked about sliced and diced. No one was even remotely close to the shredded and ripped look that Costa brought to the stage. Coupled with a Guns n’ Roses posing routine Costa placed 2nd in the Male Bodybuilding (advanced) division.

Chantal Contant – Chantal was obviously ready to ride with her amazing physique and motorcycle themed two piece leather outfit. The judges were along for the ride placing her in 2nd in the Female Fitness Model (masters) division.

Israel Cloutier – Placing 2nd in the Male Bodybuilders (novice) division Israel brought a wicked physique along with a fun energetic posing routine that had very nice transitions.

Dimitri Tchouprounov– Dimitri came out with his own brand of charm with platinum blonde hair and a signature Ivan Drago look (with theme wear and a boxing strut to match). He wasn’t joking when he said “I must break you!” as he broke into 2nd place in the Swimsuit Model Male (open) division and 3rd place in the Male Fitness Model (open) division.
