Fitness For Health Forum in Kampala

On May 3rd 2009 a bodybuilding and fitness show named ‘Bob Classic’ was launched at the Kampala Sheraton. Organized by Bob Enterprise Fitness Consultants, a Los Angeles, California based health Awareness Company, the show was aimed at targeting students and career professionals between the ages of 18 and 65 by providing them with fitness training services, gymnasium setups, health awareness programs and body building and fitness development promotion services.

Robert Ssebugwawo, its director, says his company intends to organize body building contests and workshops to educate Ugandans on fitness and health. “Our target is mainly students and career professionals. Their main interest should be maintaining a healthy life style while aiming for personal fitness goals. Our vision is that our audience will enroll in fitness programs and utilize our sponsors’ products to enhance their health.” He says.

Ssebugwawo adds that he wants to inspire every Ugandan to engage in regular fitness exercises of any kind. “The theme of the forthcoming Bob Classic competition is Wealth in Fitness. I want to encourage Ugandans to exercise daily, eat nutritious food, rest enough more regularly and to go for periodical medical checkups to make sure that all is well with their health situations.”

Ssebugwawo has also donated a website, www.uabbfa.org, to the Uganda bodybuilding association to promote Ugandan bodybuilders to achieve international recognition. His works on fitness and bodybuilding is recognized and has been documented by Flex Magazine, the world’s number one body building magazine.

His company has also been working with Champion of the Champions, a Florida-based Bodybuilding icon; Gaspari Nutrition, a nutrition company; Dr. Rafael Santonja, the President of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness in Madrid; Mr. Olympia, Dexter Jackson and Anthony Melvin IFBB Professional among others.

Bob Fitness Consultants is involved in fitness training of the elderly and youth in Los Angeles, California, and intends to extend these programs to Uganda. In addition, the company intends to help interested Ugandans to set up and own gyms of their own. They want to assist all fitness enthusiasts by offering consulting services to them and to every sports team available in the country.

Ssebugwawo says his company will collaborate with UABBFA to hold monthly fitness seminars and forums. It will also conduct radio talk shows to teach Ugandans the basics and fundamentals of fitness and wellness. Ssebugwawo says he will hold annual fitness breakfasts to encourage Ugandans to master the principles of proper nutrition.

“We will introduce educative fitness workshops to train more fitness trainers who can help others in different parts of the country. I will also write fitness columns in newspapers and magazine to reach out to Ugandans and help them learn more tips of living well and healthy.”

Ssebugwawo intends to work hand in hand with the Ministry of Education and Sports to come up with better ways of “planting the seeds of fitness and health management” so as to have more fit Ugandans who are productive and versatile to help our beloved Uganda grow and prosper.

Schwarzenegger opens tech fair in Germany

HANNOVER, Germany (AP) — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger opened a major technology fair in Germany Monday along with Chancellor Angela Merkel, and recalled his time in the country as a young man.

“We are gathering in challenging times,” Schwarzenegger acknowledged at the CeBIT fair, where California is the partner state this year.

However, he added that it is time “to stand up and refuse to fail.” The fair is “all about pumping up your business,” he said.

“Technology is our greatest asset,” Schwarzenegger said. “Technology is also helping us to develop cleaner cars … and to fight against climate change.”

During his visit to Hannover, Schwarzenegger is to pick up an award from the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany for his “extraordinary commitment to environment and energy.”

Despite California’s severe budget crisis, the Republican governor is well known for his crusades against global climate change and his advocacy of alternative energy.

Schwarzenegger, a native of neighboring Austria and a former champion bodybuilder, said of Germany that “this country holds a special place in my heart.”

“I spent two years in Munich, and those were the crucial years of my life,” he said, having moved there at age 19. “It was the springboard for my bodybuilding career.”

“I’ve always cherished the time spent here,” he said, adding that he “never imagined that I would come back to Germany as the governor of California.”

Schwarzenegger added in German that he is “looking forward to German beer and German food.”

He ended his remarks with a catch phrase from his acting days: “Hasta la vista, baby.”

Dancing, archery, and penny scales at Arnold Active Aging Festival

Dancing, archery, and penny scales at Arnold Active Aging Festival

You can brush up your dancing, learn from a 70-year-old how to hit the archer’s bulls eye, and weigh yourself on an Early American biofeedback device–a penny scales, all at the Arnold Active Aging Festival March 6.

These activities, and a dozen more listed below, all are geared to help you increase your ability to achieve your life goals and do more of the things YOU want to do.

The newest addition to this year’s Active Aging Festival is “Brush Up Your Dancing,” led by Ron Clark, of Dance Plus Ballroom in Grandview.  A “smorgasbord of other dance studios” will run throughout the day, with well-known instructors presenting beginner / refresher lessons and social dancing.

A Friday Night Dance Party will cap off the evening, from 7-10pm, also in the Regency Ballroom.
“Why dance? To truly enjoy special occasions, for your wedding, for better health (exercise), or just for fun!” said Ron Clark.  “Learning to dance is a great balance to relieve everyday stress.”  Clark and his instructors have helped thousands of Central Ohio adults and youth learn and enjoy social and ballroom dancing at Dance Plus Ballroom, and in dozens of rec centers, middle schools and high schools.

The overall focus of the 3rd Arnold Active Aging Festival is to help adults feel better, move better, and be better, said Jim Lorimer, co-producer of the Arnold Sports Festival.  “This is a great opportunity to improve #1—you!”

The event runs 9am-4pm, Friday, March 6, 2009 in the Hyatt Regency Ballroom at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

“Each activity will follow a ‘tell-show-do’ approach, with a brief presentation, followed by a teacher demonstration, and audience participation led by professionals,”

Other expert presenters include Upper Arlington artist and collector Chris Steele, 70-year-old world archery champion Arlyne Rhode, and Richard Lewis, Sr., a 53-year veteran travel agent.

Steele will bring samples of “The American Weigh,” his collection of more than 200 penny scales, which captures a slice of Americana, a time when health-conscious Americans monitored their weight daily on penny scales, because the only other scales generally available were in doctors’ offices.

Three lucky attendees can win the opportunity to see a display of Steele’s “100 Best Scales” in their Columbus-area private location.  The Smithsonian, Toledo Art Museum, Cincinnati’s Taft Museum, and the Columbus Museum of Art have drawn on Steele’s collection for exhibitions.  One museum director said:  “…the penny scale is worth a pound of study…a symbol of the universal quest for a healthy, trim appearance…”

For Arlyne Rhode archery has been a lifetime pursuit and keeps her fit and focused. She won nine consecutive Minnesota National Field Archery Association competitions in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978 she won the Women’s Professional Flight champion crown and became a record-holder as the Women’s Footbow Flight World Record with a distance shot of 1,113 yards, 2 feet, six inches – a record that still stands in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Rhode has continued to inspire athletes of every age with her record breaking performances. As the 2008 Arizona Senior Olympic Champion, Rhode stunned the world when she qualified for the 2009 National Senior Olympics.

Other expert presenters include Scott Sonnon, “Flow Coach” of the Internet; Deborah Redder, designer of the SilverSneakers™ program; David Zid, creator of Delay the Disease: Exercise and Parkinson’s Disease; and Frank Forencich, author of The Exuberant Animal and Play as if Your Life Depends on It.

Sonnon, has been a leader of the wellness revolution for more than 10 years.  Chiropractors and medical doctors have evaluated his Ageless Mobility™ program and say his approach helps fight osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and nerve impingement and tendonitis.

Redder is designer and choreographer of the SilverSneakers® Group Exercise Program, which offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and a socially-oriented group exercise program that allows older adults to take greater control of their health.  Members receive a free fitness center membership and access to conditioning classes and equipment.

Zid has been an accredited trainer in Columbus for 11 years, and currently leads three weekly exercise classes for 180 individuals with Parkinson’s.  He will tailor his presentation to persons with Parkinson’s and other diseases, and their caregivers, and will lead a demonstration with 60 of his regular students.

Forencich is creator of The Exuberant Animal:  the Power of Health, Play and Joyful Movement, and Play as if Your Life Depends on It:  Functional Exercise and Living for Homo Sapiens.   Exuberant Animal is a health philosophy that promotes health, vitality and physical happiness by combining the study of human performance with play-based movement training. Participants will learn how to transform their bodies through a multi- disciplinary approach that is invigorating, liberating and life-changing.

Ticket Discounts for Advance Sales:

The Strongest of All

For the past eight years the strongest men in the world have come to Columbus Ohio for the Arnold Strongman Classic.

Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania has won every Arnold Strongman Classic competition except for the inaugural event in 2002, which was won by former Olympian and current pro wrestler Mark Henry of the United States. This year a new champion will be crowned because Savickas, who will appear as a judge, will take the year off from competition.

Also on hand will be strongman celebrities Bill Kazmaier, one of history’s strongest men; Magnus ver Magnusson, four-time winner of the World’s Strongest Man contest; Vasyl Virastyuk, past winner of both the World’s Strongest Man contest and the IFSA World Championship; and Mark Henry, who has the highest Weightlifting/Powerlifting combined total in history.

The winner of this year’s Arnold Strongman Classic will deserve to be called The Strongest Man in the World. The events featured rely heavily on sheer brute strength. The contest features extremely heavy weights for overhead and pulling events as well as for lifting and carrying special implements short distances.

Meet the colossal athletes:

Vidas Blekaitis - Lithuania
Training partner of Zydrunas Savickas and two time Baltic Strongest Man, he’s one of the very few men to have made an overhead log-lift of 440 lbs. He stands 5’lO” and weighs in at 340 lbs.

Ervin Katona - Serbia
The Balkans’ Strongest Man, Katona is a newcomer but he has made great strides over the past year. At 6’2”, Katona weighs in at 341 lbs.

Mikhail Koklyaev - Russia
Six time Russian National Weightlifting Champion, 3rd place finisher at last year’s Arnold. A favorite of many fans, Misha is considered the greatest strength athlete in the world because of his high ranking in the Strongman sport as well as his lifts of 462 lbs. in the snatch and 551 lbs. in the clean and jerk. He stands 6’3” and weighs 335 lbs.

Andrus Murumets - Estonia
Three time Estonia Strongest Man, 3rd at Arnold in 2007, Andrus has set numerous world records in the farmers walk and is considered to have the greatest grip in the sport. He’s 6’2”, 320 lbs.

Travis Ortmeyer - USA
Winner of the 2008 Madison Square Garden Strongman contest over a number of top strongmen, including Derek Poundstone. Travis owns the world’s heaviest Manhood Stone, at 600 lbs, and he has almost mastered it in practice. He is 6’4”, 320 lbs.

Dave Ostlund - USA
2007 Venice Beach Super Series, 1st Place; 2008 Hawaii’s Strongest Man, 1st Place; 2008 World’s Strongest Man, 3rd Place. He stands 6’7” and weighs 340 lbs.

Oleksandr Pekanov - Ukraine
Is one of the best deadlifters and overhead pressers in the history of the sport and is the strongest man in the Ukraine now that the great Vasyl Virastyuk has retired. He’s 6’2” and 400 lbs.

Phil Pfister - USA
Winner of the 2006 World’s Strongest Man contest and the first American to do so since the great Bill Kazmaier. He is a very tall 6’6” and weighs 380 lbs.

Derek Poundstone - USA
Along with Koklyaev is the favorite to win this year. He’s the 2008 World’s Strongest Man, 2nd place; 2008 Mohegan Sun Champion; 2008 Fortissimus Champion where he beat Zydrunas Savickas, and 2008 Arnold Runner up, he deadlifts an amazing 900 lbs. He’s 6’1” and weighs 320 lbs.

Brian Siders - USA
Brian is the world’s top superheavyweight power lifters, he benches 771 lbs, squats 1000 lbs, and and deadlifts nearly 900 lbs. He’s won the World Super Heavyweight Powerlifting Championships twice. Siders stands at 6’2” and weighs 345 1bs.

Mariusz Pudzianowksi of Poland, who won the World’s Strongest Man title for a record fifth time in 2008, has been invited to compete as well. The invitation will remain open until the competition begins, according to the director of the Arnold Strongman Classic, Dr. Terry Todd.

The events they’ll attempt to conquer include the Timber Carry, Apollon’s Wheel, Tire Deadlift, Manhood Stones, Heavy Yoke and Circus Dumbbell.

The men will compete for the largest prize package in the Strongman sport–$40,000 in cash, a $25,000 watch, and a $10,000, 50 lb. bronze statue of Louis Cyr.

The 2009 Arnold Strongman Classic will be held March 6-7 during the Arnold Sports Festival at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The final event will be held March 7 at Franklin County Veterans Memorial.
