The OCB Stars & Stripes Novice Championships, OCB Yorton Cup National Championships, and IFPA Yorton Cup Pro World Championships will now be held over two days - November 13-14, 2009 - in the Washington, DC area.

All Figure categories will be held Friday November 13th at 7pm.

All Bodybuilding categories will be held Saturday November 14th at 4pm.

The sole inductee into the U.S. Natural Bodybuilding Hall of Fame for 2009 is Jim Evans. The induction ceremony took place Saturday June 6, 2009 in Albuquerque, NM during the finals  portion of the OCB Natural Southwest Bodybuilding & Figure Classic.

About Jim Evans

James (Jim) M. Evans is a 41-year veteran of the health and fitness industry and internationally recognized fitness consultant.  He was born on June 15, 1945, in Riverdale, Maryland.

As a varsity wrestler and world-class powerlifter at Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus and president of the OSU Weightlifting Club in the early 60’s, Evans became exposed early on to the illicit use of anabolic steroids among athletes and became strongly opposed to them from both a health and moral perspective.  Years later, when two 14-year-old youngsters, both members of one of his gyms in Minnesota, became involved with steroids, he knew that he had to take an active stand against steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. 

Jim has been published in dozens of magazines and newspapers over the years including Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness, Fitness & Physique, Men’s Exercise, Ironman, Best Body, Exercise for Men Only, Alliance Report on Healthcare Marketing & Strategy, Successful Retirement, Strength & Health, Under the Sun, Economic Community, and many more.  His editorials have appeared in the San Diego Business Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Des Moines Register, St. Paul Pioneer Press, and others.  His fitness column – “Senior Health & Fitness” – is published in more than 750 markets across the country every month (since 1992), and for seven years he was host of the popular radio talk show “Forever Young” on San Diego’s KCBQ 1170 AM focusing on issues of health, fitness, and quality of life for older adults.

ANNUAL OCB AWARDS

At the end of the competition season the OCB asks for nominations for the Annual OCB Awards. The OCB Awards recognize notable athletes, as well as folks behind the scenes who have helped make the OCB more successful. A group of peers have voted, and the 2009 recipients (from the 2008 season) are:

Rookie of the Year - Jill Vadala

The Rookie of the Year award recognizes a first-year competitor who is likely to experience great success in the sport in the future. And any Figure Pro planning out her competition season this year is looking in her rearview mirror for Jill Vadala of Virginia. Jill began her competition career in April 2008 as a novice overall champ and finished off the year achieving the highest title the OCB offers: Yorton Cup National Figure Champion (and she become an IFPA Figure Pro in the process). We look forward to seeing Jill on the pro stage and congratulate her as our Rookie of the Year.

Grand Master - Butch Paradis

The Grand Master award recognizes a Grand Masters (Age 50 or Over) competitor whose physique inspires and impresses onlookers and seems to defy the aging processes. You would never suspect that Connecticut’s Butch Paradis is 52-years old. We had to look at his driver’s license to make sure he was eligible to compete in the Grand Masters 50+ division. Butch has been working out since he was 10-years old, competed in powerlifting in the Marines Corps in 1974, and started bodybuilding in the 1980’s. That lifelong commitment to fitness shows because Butch looks incredible!

Most Improved - Theresa Evans

The Most Improved award recognizes a competitor who showed exceptional improvement from the previous year. Theresa Evans from Connecticut presented herself well in 2007, but she needed improvements in her conditioning and upper-lower symmetry. When she returned to the stage in 2008 with tight conditioning, more defined abs, and sexier shapely legs she literally inched her way to top with a 2^nd place finish in Rhode Island, a 1^st place finish in the tall class in New Jersey, and finally an overall win in New York in October that qualified her for an IFPA Figure Pro card. We eagerly anticipate her pro debut.

Iron Man/Iron Woman - Richard Herskovitz

The Iron Man/Iron Woman award recognizes the competitor who competed in the largest number of OCB competitions during the year. Maryland’s Richard Herskovitz competed five times in 2008, more than any other competitor, so he’s picking up the OCB Iron Man award… probably on the way to his next show!

Service - Nicole Weeks

The Service award recognizes an individual who dedicated his/her time to the sport of natural physique development and went above and beyond the call of duty. Even though she couldn’t compete last year due to some medical issues, Florida’s Nicole Weeks just couldn’t stay away from the natural bodybuilding scene. Volunteering as a judge, expeditor, emcee, and contributor to Fitness & Physique Magazine, Nicole Weeks receives this year’s OCB Service Award. In 2009 she added contest promoter to that list while planning her return to the pro stage.

Judge of the Year - Muskee Books

The Judge of the Year is Maryland’s Muskee Books. He dedicated his time to judging four competitions in 2008, answering the call to jump in at the last second for one of them. Muskee’s scoring accuracy was in the upper half of the judging panel consistently. After the competitions are over, Muskee stays to answer questions from competitors and provide valuable feedback to aid their improvement in future events.

Promoter of the Year - James Carron

The OCB recognizes James Carron of Massachusetts as the Promoter of the Year. James promotes the OCB Cape Cod Natural and IFPA Gaspari Nutrition Pro Classic each October. Competitors look forward to receiving bags stuffed with goodies, a large comfortable venue, and a well-organized staff of volunteers. This past year James, who owns Cape Cod Nutrition Center and TopSupplementsOnline.com, became the benefactor of the Natural Physique Forum when the OCB message board needed a new home. James Carron is known for being a generous and caring guy, and that is evidenced by how much he gives back to the sport he loves so much.

The Buser - Saiid Tejan-Kamara

The Buser award recognizes a competitor who has outstanding physique symmetry. It was named after Chuck Buser, who many feel was the epitome of muscular symmetry during the infancy of the natural bodybuilding movement. This year’s Buser award goes to Delaware’s Saiid Tejan-Kamara, who also clinched the overall title at the 2008 OCB Yorton Cup National Championship, thereby making him eligible for IFPA Pro competition. Saiid’s physique has exceptional balance, impressive size, and deep muscle bellies that equate to an amazing full and shapely appearance from top to bottom.

Inspiration - Aram Hamparian

The Inspiration award recognizes a competitor who overcame difficult obstacles and whose actions and determination are inspiring.  Onstage New York’s Aram Hamparian is very impressive. His awesome conditioning and good size are evident. His struggles haven’t been as apparent. Aram has overcome a few bouts with muscle wasting diseases. He has also survived stomach cancer, Wegeman’s disease, and a history of drugs and alcohol. He doesn’t talk about these issues much. He would rather deflect the attention away from himself and use his negative experiences to help others as an addictions counselor. Aram, you are an inspiration and we look forward to seeing you on stage again very soon!

The Sullivan - Neal Grossman

The Sullivan is a sportsmanship award that recognizes an individual who displayed excellent sportsmanship and demonstrated kind, caring and selfless acts during the year. While most competitors backstage focus on getting ready to go out, Maryland’s Neal Grossman can be found helping others. Whether it’s helping put tanner on, or helping others perfect their poses to best display themselves on stage, Neal is known for being friendly and positive. His sportsmanship and encouragement to others have earned him the Sully Award for this year.

MVP of the Year - Kareem “Reemo” Petteway

The Most Valuable Person of the Year award recognizes an individual who contributed to the growth, betterment and spirit of the OCB and the sport of natural physique. This year’s MVP of the Year is Maryland’s Kareem “Reemo” Petteway. Whether it’s collaborating on new drug testing guidelines, fielding email and phone call questions from promoters and competitors, promoting competitions, writing articles for Fitness & Physique Magazine, or judging, Reemo is always working on something. The OCB wouldn’t be the same without Reemo. Oh, and he also managed to compete a few times too with two 2^nd place pro finishes and an overall pro title!

With the 2009 contest season underway, the INBF/WNBF Executive Committee has gone through some changes. Steve Downs has left both organizations and NB&F. Mr. Cheh Low remains as President of each federation, Charlie Carollo has been promoted to Vice-President and Rich Fitter assumes the role of Chairman. HOUSTON, TX–(May 28, 2009) - FAME World Tour - On May 21, 2009 Daryl Gazey, Director of Operations for the WBFF (World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation), published a “Rant” and stated, “It is safe to assume all top level athletes are taking performance enhancing drugs”. Mr. Gazey continued by stating “using performance enhancing drugs is a personal choice and the WBFF sees no reason to test their athletes”, which is a direct contradiction to their website’s FAQs #5 (as of May 23rd, 2009 - SEE BELOW) stating the WBFF does test their athletes, which was actually changed as of May 24th, 2009.Jason C. Powell, Director of Operations for the FAME World Tour, sanctioned by the World Natural Sports Organization (WNSO) released an official statement in direct rebuttal to the WBFF’s rant stating “As the largest worldwide natural organization, our official policy on the use of sports enhancing drugs is that they are illegal,unhealthy and we take every measure to test, identify and expose ‘using’ athletes within our organization.” Mr. Powell adds, “It is unfortunate the WBFF suggests all their own athletes are ‘users’ and I would personally like to know the thoughts of the sponsors of the WBFF now that they know they are directly supporting a federation that openly advocates the use of sports enhancing drugs.”

By DAHALIA SMITH,NG Sports Reporter,dahalia@nasguard.com Long Island, Abaco and Grand Bahamian based bodybuilders have recently benefited from their own bodybuilding and fitness association to govern their respective athletes, but New Providence athletes have always been under a wider scope, the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (BBFF).

However, yesterday, it was announced at a press conference held at the Mystical Fitness Gym, that the New Providence Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (NPBFA) was formed to assist athletes based in the capital. According to BBFF President Danny Sumner, former Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Champion in the heavyweight division, and pro card holder Aaron Green is expected to head the NPBFA, and former powerlifter and seasoned bodybuilder Chris McQueen was voted in as Vice President.

Those in attendance were Long Island coach Omar Daley, McQueen, Sumner, BBFF Vice President Chevy Roker and BBFF Executive Director Derek Bullard. Sumner explained that forming this governing body is imperative in an effort to get the bodybuilding and fitness athletes more involved with promoting healthy lifestyles. Prior to the new body’s formation, the BBFF itself was responsible for the athletes living in New Providence.

“This body was formed with good intentions in mind, which is to get as much athletes in Nassau into a consistent program. I endorse Green and McQueen’s election into office as they both have a lot of experience and I believe that they will do a great job in getting this association going. This year we have a lot of programs that the federation is looking at which deals with expansion and promoting fitness and health throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas,” said Sumner.

McQueen, as one of the chief pioneers of the NPBFA, is excited for this opportunity.

“Thanks to Danny and the federation for assisting with the formation of this new body. Right now we are focused on infusing young blood into the sport. We are prepared to reach new levels through this body. This is why we ask all of the athletes to work along with the NPBFA,” noted McQueen.

Roker who also serves as Marketing and Public Relations Officer of the federation, and is also a certified judge, aims to introduce the sport to high school student athletes.

The BBFF also released its 2009 calendar. The events slated for the first half of year include the Eastern Caribbean Championships set for May 29-31 in Trinidad, the Novice Championships slated for May 30 in Nassau, Bahamas, a mandatory training and international judging seminar tentatively set for mid-June and the Grand Bahama Championships scheduled for June 27.

The schedule is scattered with events during the last six months of this year including the National Championships on July 11, the World Games from July 16-20 in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, the Antilles Championships from July 25-27 in the Dominican Republic, the Continental Championship set for September 20 - October 4 in St. George’s Grenada, the Women’s Bodybuilding and Fitness World Championship scheduled for October 16-19 in Italy, the Men’s World Championships set for November 2-7 in the United Arab Emirates, the Juniors and Masters Bodybuilding and Fitness World Championships to be held in November in Poland and the Central American and Caribbean Championships scheduled for December in Honduras.

The South African Natural Bodybuilding Association is seeking sponsors for the 2009 World Natural Bodybuilding Championships

The South African Natural Bodybuilding Association is hosting the World Natural Bodybuilding Championships at the Market Hall- Grandwest Casino on the 31 October 2009.

Since we are a non-profitable organisation we are unable to raise the R 310 000,00 needed to make this prestigious event a reality and therefore need assistance from whoever is by means to help us in any manner possible. Since we will be having lots of exhibitions in malls and centres to promote this championships your company will get a lot of exposure at these events as well as with the aggressive advertising.The South African Natural bodybuilding Association promote Natural bodybuilding without the use of illegal substances. We also promote the sport amongst the youth starting with youngsters from as young as ten years. By giving them the opportunity to build their bodies naturally, they also respect their bodies and would not use other illegal street drugs. The healthier the body, the better and quicker it grows.Our competition will start on the Friday, 30 October 2009 with a junior Championships and all sponsors will also get an opportunity to display their products.
The Main event will take place on Saturday, 31 October 2009 with over 35 coutries competing at the Market Hall which are able to house + 2 000 spectators.
We therefore plea for the assistance of any companies or individuals.

NPC MEMBERSHIP

• Each competitor must be a member of the NPC.

SANCTIONING A BIKINI DIVISION EVENT

• An NPC BIKINI CHAMPIONSHIPS must be run along with another NPC division i.e. Bodybuilding, fitness or figure contest.

CONTEST ENTRIES

• All height classes and awards must be awarded as advertised on the entry form.
• Height classes may not be combined on the day of the show and this cannot be advertised as a possibility.

AWARDS

• Cash awards are not permitted.

CHECK-INS

• BIKINI Division competitors will be checked in and measured the same as Fitness and Figure competitors.

HEIGHT CLASSES – For Pro qualifying event

• Up to and including 5’1”
• Over 5’1” and up to and including 5’2-1/2”
• Over 5’2-1/2” and up to and including 5’4”
• Over 5’4” and up to and including 5’5-1/2
• Over 5’5-1/2” and up to and including 5’7”
• Over 5’7”

If promoter chooses to do fewer height classes:

For all contests with two (2) classes:

• Up to and including 5’4”
• Over 5’4”

For all contests with three (3) classes:

• Up to and including 5’4”
• Over 5’4” and up to and including 5’6”
• Over 5’6”

For all contests with four (4) classes:

• Up to and including 5’2”
• Over 5’2” and up to and including 5’4”
• Over 5’4” and up to and including 5’6”
• Over 5’6”

COMPETITOR RULES

• National level contests do not permit competitors to crossover into Bodybuilding, Fitness or Figure at the same event. All other competitions are permitted to have crossovers at the discretion of the promoter with district chairperson approval.
• Competitors will compete in a two-piece suit. The bottom of the suit must be v-shaped. No thongs are permitted. Competitors can compete in an off the rack suit. All swimsuits must be in good taste.
• Competitors must wear high heels.
• Competitors may wear jewelry.

COMPETITION JUDGING

Presentation

• Competitors will walk onstage alone and perform their Model Walk (personal preference)
• The Model Walk consists of the following:

Walk to the center of the stage, stop and do a front stance then a full turn and do a rear stance then turn to the front again in front of the judges and then proceed to the side of the stage.

Comparison Round, Two-Piece Swimsuit

• Competitors will be judged wearing a two-piece swimsuit and heels.
• The competitors will be brought out in a group and directed to do a full front and rear stance.
• Judges will have the opportunity to compare competitors against each other in half turns. (No side judging permitted, front and back only.)
• Judges will be scoring competitors on the following items:
  • Balance and Shape
  • Overall physical appearance including complexion, skin tone, poise and overall presentation.

QUALIFYING FOR NATIONAL LEVEL EVENTS

• For the year 2009 only, there will be no qualification necessary to enter National Bikini competitions.
• The following placings will qualify competitors for one year for the NPC national level Bikini contests:
  • Top 5 places in each class at National Qualifying events only.

The NPC national level contests are listed below:

• JUNIOR USA BIKINI CHAMPIONSHIP
• JUNIOR NATIONAL BIKINI CHAMPIONSHIPS
• USA BIKINI CHAMPIONSHIPS

QUALIFYING FOR IFBB PRO STATUS

The following placings at selected national level events will qualify competitors to turn professional and compete in the IFBB Pro Bikini Contests.

• USA CHAMPIONSHIPS – Height class winners earn IFBB Pro Card (6 height classes)
• NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – Height class winners earn IFBB Pro Card (6 height classes)
• JUNIOR USA CHAMPIONSHIPS – top 2 in the Overall Comparison earn IFBB Pro Cards – (6 height classes)
• JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS  - top four (4) in the Overall Comparison earn IFBB Pro Cards (6 height classes)
• IFBB NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS -  Top two (2) in Overall Comparison earn IFBB Pro Cards (6 height classes)
• TEAM UNIVERSE CHAMPIONSHIPS – Top two (2) in each height class earn their IFBB pro Card (6 height classes)

From WNBF/INBF Representative Rich Fitter

In order to honor the requests of NANBF members who want to compete with the INBF (International Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation) – as they’ve been able to in past years with a reciprocal membership card policy – the INBF will allow current NANBF competitors to compete in INBF shows for the 2009 contest season with their NANBF card. This ruling is for 2009 only, and applies to events in the Midwest, as well as throughout the entire U.S. – anywhere INBF events are held.

To be eligible for this program, NANBF members simply must have a current valid NANBF card and present it upon registration at the INBF competition(s) of their choice. The card will be accepted as if it were an INBF card. If the card is expired, however, athletes will be required to purchase an INBF card to compete at INBF events.

Should an athlete purchase an INBF card at a competition (or through the INBF website at inbf.net), the card costs just $40, which includes Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness magazine as part of your membership.

If you decide not to join the INBF, but still would like to subscribe to Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness magazine you can visit the exercisegroup.com website and order online. Note: NB&F magazine is published four times a year, and is the only exclusively drug-free bodybuilding and fitness magazine on newsstands nationwide.

Also note that the INBF prides itself on having the strictest drug-testing policies in all of natural bodybuilding and figure. These guidelines mirror the WNBF, so there is no difference between the amateur and pro ranks. Prohormones such as DHEA, 6-OXO and other similar non-natural compounds are not allowed.

In addition, the INBF provides the most competitive natural outlets of any organization, with Bodybuilding and Figure joined by Ms. Fit Body (a women’s figure/bodybuilding hybrid division), Best Body Swimsuit and Mr. Fitness Male Model Search at most contests. And select INBF events are pro-qualifiers for the WNBF Pro Natural Bodybuilding & Figure divisions, with Ms. Fit Body division now joining the WNBF pro ranks, and both the pro Best Body Swimsuit Contest and pro Mr. Fitness Male Model Search shows in September featuring drug-testing.
