Birmingham fitness instructor gets second chance on TV’s Gladiators

CONTENDER ready!

A Birmingham fitness instructor will be taking on the might of television’s Gladiators for the second time.

Muscleman Justin Thompson first battled the likes of Cobra, Wolf and Saracen when he appeared on the classic show as a teenager back in 1995.

He fought his way through to the quarter-finals before he was knocked out and was dying to have another bite at the cherry.

Justin’s wish was granted when the ITV show was revived by Sky and has now worked his way through to the quarter-finals again, taking on new characters such as Goliath, Spartan and Oblivion.

The 28-year-old, who works as a fitness instructor at Matthew Boulton College and teaches council fitness classes in Small Heath, said: “The show was really big and on ITV on Saturday nights back in the 90s.

“The difference now is that studio is smaller and I have had a better experience this time around.”

Justin, who lives in the city centre and is father to Leila, aged four, and eight-year-old Capreece, applied for a place on the show last September.

He underwent a gruelling training regime to make sure he was in top condition.

“I watched what I ate, when I ate and in what quantities,” he said. “I ran with Birchfield Harriers and I hit the gym three times a week.” Justin said.

He attended trials, auditions and a screening at Joseph Chamberlain College before he got through to more trials in London.

Justin said: “Then there were drugs tests and I passed and was picked as a standby.

“I was very disappointed but then they saw me in training and I was picked as a contestant.”

The series was filmed in November and, while he remained tight-lipped about the outcome, he said he was pleased his daughters could see him in action.

He said: “I want to show my daughters that anything is possible when they put their mind to it. They are over the moon.”

Miller shares message of fitness

UTICA —

When Shannon Miller was at her best in gymnastics, she was among the very best the world has ever seen.

Her seven Olympic medals are the most of any American gymnast ever.

That’s the Shannon Miller everyone knows.

During her speech Saturday at the Radisson Centre in Utica, she spoke about personal struggles beyond the uneven bars and the balance beam.

Miller talked about her insecurities as a teenager in high school having to wear a leotard and she spoke about gaining weight after she retired from competitive gymnastics.

“When I say I gained weight, I mean at least four sizes in six to eight months,” Miller told the nearly all-female audience. “I don’t care who you are, that’s tough for a woman. Especially when each time you make an appearance or walk into a room people expect that you’re going to be in Olympic shape.”

Miller was speaking as part of the “Makeover My Heart” day-long event hosted by Slocum-Dickson Medical Group to raise awareness among women about heart disease.

Miller said she had to re-dedicate herself to staying in shape and being healthy, and she encouraged the women in the audience to instill that same discipline in themselves.

“If we want to be healthy, we have to make a conscious decision that we can do it,” she said. “A healthy lifestyle is a lifestyle of personal empowerment.”

Since she was part of the “Magnificent 7” Olympic gold medal team in Atlanta back in 1996, Miller has been appointed to the Governor’s Fitness Council in the state of Florida, founded a charity to fight childhood obesity and has run the New York City Marathon.

Her stories resonated with the people in the audience.

“It was touching to see how willing she was to share her personal experience,” said Odette Lajeunesse of New York Mills. “You don’t see that side of celebrities too often.”

Chantal Pianka of Yorkville said she will remember the speech for its lessons.

“It was real,” she said. “It was a reminder that a healthy lifestyle is important to everyone from Olympic athletes to regular everyday people.”

Brittany Pagoda, a sophomore gymnast at Whitesboro High School, looked up to Miller during those famous ’96 Olympics. Pagoda said she’s familiar with some of the pressures, work schedules and insecurities that Miller spoke about.

“I definitely can relate to what she was talking about,” Pagoda said. “I know what it’s like to train and be in competition and to try to stay healthy.”

In the end, Miller’s speech was about perseverance as much as health.

It was about a steadfast desire to meet the goals each person should lay for themselves.

“When you watch the Olympics you only see the final product,” Miller said. “For most of those girls that minute-and-a-half routine or that 10 second vault took 10 years to perfect. Nothing comes easy.”

SUN Sports & Entertainment, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: SUNR) announced today it has signed an Agreement to produce up to six Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Events in 2009 for FAME USA (www.FAMEUSAEVENTS.com), a series of events showcasing the elite natural and drug-free athletes of the country, starting on May 8th, 2009 in Houston, Texas. SUN President Clyde Gentry III stated, “Mixed martial arts competitors are world-class athletes and they will feel right at home with FAME USA. This is a great co-branding opportunity for ART OF WAR and the crossover market for both fans and sponsors is limitless. FAME USA President Jason Powell, a martial artist and professional bodybuilder in his own right, commented, “We are very excited to include MMA in our line-up of events because our market is their market and vice versa. When we look at the growth of our business, MMA has organically become a natural fit and we know our fans will appreciate it.”

After the FAME USA’s Lone Star Weekend (May 8-9, 2009), the series is tentatively scheduled in the following cities: Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Atlanta, GA; and New Orleans, LA.

“With the crossover market and the nationwide platform, we are reviewing different broadcasting vehicles and have had numerous new sponsorship opportunities,” said Gentry. “We hope to build on this relationship with FAME USA for years to come to making it the number one bodybuilding and fitness competition in America.”
