Veggies secret of her strength

Strongest Asian girl would carry her kid sister on shoulders for workout on hills

Jamshedpur, June 25: What can make you the strongest girl in Asia? Ask 22-year-old Romina Chanu and she will tell you determination, focus and a diet of vegetables.

The Manipuri girl, who won the Strongest Girl of Asia 2009 title last month at the Asian Powerlifting Championship in Udaipur, swears by yongchak (sticky beans) and pine roots to get that extra edge.

“That’s the recipe of my success. I follow a strict regimen, complimented with lots of green vegetables and typical Manipuri soups. It keeps me strong and energetic. I also work out for six hours daily,” said Chanu, who arrived in the city this morning from Jabalpur.

Here to participate in Sunday’s National Integration Youth Harmony Run organised by the Jamshedpur unit of Prajapati Brahmakumaris Ishwariya Viswavidyalaya, the power lifter explained that yongchak (a Manipuri delicacy) and pine roots were rich in protein content that were good for bone joints.

“I don’t depend on non-vegetarian stuff to keep myself strong. I’m happy with the vegetables. I also savour lots of fruits and juices, besides bamboo tenga and mushrooms,” said Chanu, who has scripted her success story without the help of a coach.

Chanu took up powerlifting in April 2007, following the footsteps of her uncle, Sant Kumar, a former Mr Asia in body building. “He was the only one in my family who was well known. I also wanted to earn a name for my country and my family. My uncle prodded me to become a powerlifter,” she said.

The Asian Powerlifting Federation handed her the title of Strongest Girl of Asia after she topped in the 155kg (squat) and pocketed silvers in 65kg (bench) and 145kg (dead lift) categories in the junior girls’ section.

In fact, Chanu surpassed the Asian record of 155kg (squat), which finally won her the honour. Last year, she won the Strongest Girl of India title.

Shoulders play an important role when it comes to powerlifting and Chanu knows how to make them strong. When she was denied an opportunity to work out in gyms in Imphal because she was a girl who loved power sports, she found a way out.

“I started carrying my younger sister Zenny on my shoulders for my daily workouts on the hills. I would walk and jog for over an hour with Zenny on my shoulders,” the youngster said, who weighs 55kg and is 5ft tall.

Chanu is disappointed that there are no takers or women powerlifters in her home state. “People there don’t like women taking part in power sports and that’s why I am not allowed to work out in gyms. I don’t even have a coach. I practice on my own,” she said.

Despite the odds, Chanu has come a long way. “I’m not from a wealthy family. My father is an autorickshaw driver who somehow manages to make ends meet. We are four sisters and a brother,” said Chanu, who is now looking for a job.

What next? “I’m preparing for the World Powerlifting Meet to be held in the US in November. I’m happy with the Asian title but I want to go further,” she said.

Eight from GB named to powerlifting national squad

Names of Grand Bahamians making the cut for The Bahamas Powerlifting Feder-ation’s national teams, which are expected to represent the nation at the 12th Pan American Regional Power-lifting and 7th North American Regional Power-lifting Championships, have been released.

Meanwhile, the New Providence lifters qualifying event for the championships expected to be held in Miami, Florida, from August 5-8, is set for the Independence Holiday weekend.

Those already named to that team include - Bernard ‘Spinks’ Rolle, Jerome Archer, Steve Wilson, Lamont Evans, Glenroy Stubbs, Alphonso Russell, Freddie Adderley and Krystal Munnings.

The coaching staff includes - Keith Cox, Wellington ‘Cat’ Sears, John Mills, Patrick Storr, Stubbs, Kenton Rolle and Bernard ‘Spinks’ Rolle. BPF president Rex Burnside said the national team will be as large as 15 members by the time the New Providence qualification is completed. He also expressed enthusiasm about young Bahamian lifters reviving their interest in the sport and anticipates the Family Islanders’ ability to make the national team.

“The youngest person from Grand Bahama is Alphonso who is in his early 20s. At least 90 percent of those who made the team so far are very young. We are also expecting to have at least two to three lifters from Abaco and one out of Exuma join the team,” said Burnside.

Burnside is also hoping that The Bahamas records better results from the last showing at this particular event which was in 2003, when the team returned home with three gold medals won by Leslie White, ‘Spinks’ Rolle and Bernadette Bannister.

White, who is based in New Providence, remains one of the favourites to win a medal again at this international competition. He was the overall men’s winner at the BPF’s ‘Resurrection Day’ competition, which was held at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in March. At the time, White accumulated 680 kilos in the bench press, the squat and the deadlift events. White said the March event was a good one after not having the opportunity to participate in a full powerlifting competition in several years.

“I just wanted to come out and show those in the powerlifting community that I am still here. I also used this event to see exactly where I am heading into the upcoming Nationals (Independence Holiday weekend),” he said.

According to Burnside, Bannister is not expected to try out for the team this time around.

Faye Rolle out of New Providence will attempt to join Munnings on the national team. Rolle won the overall women’s title at the ‘Resurrection Day’ event.

She is a novice powerlifter who crossed over into the sport from bodybuilding and fitness. She totalled 357.5 kilos for the win at the ‘Resurrection Day’ event.

Those planning on participating in the Independence Holiday weekend event may fill out registration forms available at most fitness gyms. Lifters meeting World Championship qualifying marks at the Florida Championships will be selected to represent The Bahamas.

The World Championships are set for the latter part of this year.

In related news, a bench press competition is slated for the last weekend in June in Grand Bahama.

Southport’s 82-year-old former powerlifting champ takes a rest

HE’S BEEN keeping Southport people in shape for 55 years, but now gym owner Dave Rodger is taking a rest … at the age of 82.

Former world, European, Commonwealth and British senior powerlifting champion Dave is finally laying down his dumbbells.

Dave, who owned gyms in Eastbank Street, Gordon Street, and more recently Workouts Family Fitness Centre in Cemetery Road, has helped more than 8,000 Southport residents keep fit.

He has also broken world and European records - all without touching performance enhancing drugs.

He said: “The only drug I’ve had is a bit of Vitamin C! I think not touching steroids is the reason I am still around today to be honest.”

He added: “It’s been my life, though it’ll be nice to eventually put my feet up. “I’ve been a working boy since I was 13, during World War II.

“Most people retire at 65, but I was busy doing 12 hour shifts, six days a week - as well as Sundays.

“Even until we closed Workouts in December I was doing 12-7pm, so I think I deserve a break!”

Dave first set up an amateur gym for his friends in a “dingy 17ft upstairs room” in Eastbank Street before opening Southport Health Studio on Gordon Street in 1961 and Workouts in 1985.

.

“I’ll certainly miss the friendship of everyone who came the gym and I’ll miss trying to help people reach their goals, whether it’s losing weight or building strength.”

Dave, of Rawlinson Road, has also proved age is no barrier to fitness, winning World Masters titles in his late 60s and travelling the globe to compete in powerlifting events.

Dave is selling off ‘Workouts’, built inside the skeleton of an old church, at auction next month to enjoy a belated retirement with wife Maureen, 67.

He said: “I don’t think I’ll be sat around. I’ll either be in the garden or in my little gym in the attic.”

Pioneer power

Cros-Lex powerlifting program takes off

When Mike Holes took the reigns of the Croswell-Lexington powerlifting program, he had about 10 athletes interested in training.

Four years and a couple of state champions later, Cros-Lex has the dominant powerlifting program in the area, traveling up to 55 athletes per meet.

“It’s all because of the dedication of our kids,” said Holes, who is a varsity football assistant and varsity baseball coach. “All I’m doing is putting together certain set, rep workouts. They are putting in all of the effort. They believe in the things the coaches are giving them.”

Great results have followed.

A couple of powerlifters have won state and even national championships.

They will have another chance to earn even more accolades.

The Pioneers compete March 19 and 20 in the state meet at Whitmore Lake High School. They also are scheduled to compete in a national meet, April 3-5 in Killeen, Texas.

The Pioneers’ roster is balanced between boys and girls.

One of the top powerlifters is Amanda Youngheim.

The sophomore set a state record in the squat in her first year of competition.

“We started off with a pretty small girls team, and it’s grown so much,” she said. “We have a lot of fun, and I guess the word spread.

“I love the adrenaline rush you get when you are lifting. I like the squat the best even though it’s more difficult to do. I’m doing pretty good at it.”

Holes has been equally impressed with the growth of the program.

“The first year here we had some kids basically working out on their own,” he said. “Now that it’s been a couple of years, we have a roster of 55 kids. The kids really seem to enjoy it. You have to be dedicated.”

The success in the past couple of years could be part of the reason the program continues to grow.

Last year at the state meet, junior Jimmy Fairchild took home a title. And then at the national meet, both Fairchild and Youngheim claimed championships.

Qualifying for the state and national meet is the focus heading into every new season.

The Pioneers begin training in the middle of November, have practice meets in December and the real competition begins in January.

“Our season is longer than basketball season,” Holes said. “They really work hard.”

The Pioneers attend five to six meets a season, three of which are regional qualifiers.

Fairchild starred his first two years, but has missed most of this season because of a shoulder injury.

“My goal is to win states again,” said Fairchild, who has won the meet twice in the 123-pound division. “This year, I didn’t improve much because of an injury. I was out a month or two. Now I’m back lifting.”

Junior Brianna Palleschi is another powerlifter who has set big goals for the remainder of the season.

“My goal is to beat the state bench press record,” she said. “I’m working on beating myself and the record books. I haven’t gone to nationals before this year, but I will this year.”

Paraplegic Powerlifter Trains For Maine Games

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER) — 58 year old Gaelen Saucier is not your typical powerlifter. He’s paralyzed from the waist down and has been since an accident 6 years ago. After the accident Saucier developed diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

He hit the gym and teamed up with trainer Tom Constantine. When he started competing six years ago– he could bench press 147 pounds. Last year he benched 203.9 pounds.

“The thing about exercise and weightlifting and races and all that is…it keeps your attention focused and you don’t really realize that you’re exercising. You’re doing something good for yourself,” Saucier said.

Saucier has to strap his legs together to help keep his balance while he’s lifting. He says his paralysis affects his mechanics in other ways too.

“It’s all upper body, a lot of lifters…it’s ok to arch your back. You’re not supposed to use your legs but in effect you do use them if you have them,” he said

Saucier will try to beat his own record. The powerlifting competition is only one of many activities he’s involved with. He also races, plays wheelchair basketball, and sled hockey. His dream is to create a set of year round activities for people in wheelchairs.

Chavez making progress in third season

Powerlifting is still a relatively new sport at Chavez, but the Lobos have gotten stronger in their third season.

Head coach Mike Janes has his largest and most powerful group to date, which bodes well for Chavez in the future.

Chavez’s girls tied Santa Fe for first place at Madison’s Southside Classic and came in second at the Lobos’ own Eastside Classic. The boys have performed well in the Lobos’ first few meets, including the recent Westside Invitational

Both squads had several strong finishes at the inaugural Houston ISD ProMaxima Powerlifting Championships held recently at Barnett Field House, with Chavez’s girls taking second and the boys fifth.

“There seems to be more interest in powerlifting than ever before,” said Janes, Chavez’s strength and conditioning coach. “We had 11 girls at our first few meets and the number of boys is growing.”

Still, Janes said Chavez has a long way to go catch foes like Madison, which has had a powerlifting team longer than the Lobos.

“Madison has made a big commitment to the sport,” Janes said. “We want to follow their lead.”

Janes, though, said Chavez’s boys have a long way to go to qualify for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships on March 28 in Abilene.

But the Lobos have several lifters who could advance to the Region 4 Championships on March 7 at Mayde Creek,

Chavez is loaded in the 198-pound division, led by juniors Johnny Avila, James Johnson and Nelson Udeh.

Udeh placed third at the Houston ISD meet with a combined weight total of 1,235 pounds, including a 500-pound squat, a 295-pound benchpress and a 440-pound deadlift. Johnson was one spot behind Udeh at 1,215 pounds, whiile Avila was sixth at 1,100 pounds.

“Nelson played football and was one of the strongest guys on the team,” Janes said. “If we can keep him and James healthy, they can make a mark.”

Junior Dillon Smith also could be a factor at 242 pounds. Smith finished third at the Houston ISD meet with a total lift of 1,150 pounds. However, his best combined effort is more than 1,300 pounds.

“Dillon is probably only 230 pounds,” Janes said. “He’s on the light end of his weight class, but he can compete with guys who are bigger than him.”

Freshman Jessie Trevino, who competes at 148 pounds, has been impressive for a rookie, coming in third in his division at the Houston ISD meet with a combined lift of 875 pounds. Junior Kerry Brown, another football standout, is a darkhorse in the super heavyweight class.

Other lifters to watch include juniors Glen Brown and Devonta Durden and sophomore Segundo Abrego at 220 pounds and a pair of freshmen, Gilberto Cantu and Clyde McFadden, at 132.

Chavez’s girls could outshine the boys, possibly sending a nice contingent to the Region 4 Championships on March 12 in Palacios. The Lobos also hope to a send a few lifters to the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Championships on March 20-21 in Corpus Christi.

Senior Jessica Figueroa, who has lifted for three years, leads the way at 148 pounds, along with freshman Basil Lopez. Figueroa won the Houston ISD meet with a combined lift of 635 pounds, while Lopez took third with 530 pounds.

“They’ve done a great job so far,” Janes said of Figueroa and Lopez. “We expect big things from both of them.”

Also winning at the Houston ISD meet was sophomore Abigail Ramos at 97 pounds, senior Courtney Brown at 132 pounds and freshman Akela Jones at 181 pounds.

Other girls who could surprise are seniors Desirea Hernandez and Amanda Fuentes at 165 pounds and junior Marissa Morin at 181.

Janes said most of Chavez’s girls are multi-sport athletes. Lopez, for instance, is a wrestler, while most of the others are involved in softball.

“Our girls are really dedicated,” Janes said. “I’m proud of them.”

Janes said it will take time to build Chavez into a powerlifting powerhouse, but the Lobos are making progress.

“We’ve been only doing this for three years,” Janes said. “It’s going to take time.”

Everyone can benefit from lifting weights

Q: How has weightlifting changed over the past 20 years?

A: Exercise science has progressed at a remarkable pace since its conception back in the late 19th century. Likewise, what we have learned about weightlifting has improved vastly. To say all weightlifting is the same is like stating all drugs are the same. Penicillin and aspirin may both be drugs, but they are completely different medications for completely different conditions. There are four basic forms of weightlifting which include Olympic weightlifting, bodybuilding, powerlifting and general weightlifting. Even within these different forms of weightlifting, there are further subdivisions. The effects of each style and subdivision are very different from one another. Training for size (bodybuilding) is very different than training for pure strength (powerlifting).

Olympic weightlifting is very good for power and explosive strength needed by most sports such as football, baseball and basketball. Even cardiac rehabilitation now uses weightlifting (general) to help patients recover to safely go back to a normal life. Being able to lift a laundry basket or pick up your children or groceries is simply a part of everyday life for most people.

Whether you are male or female, younger or older, active or sedentary, some form of weightlifting can definitely benefit your everyday life. It is a common mistake to think weightlifting is only necessary and beneficial for athletes and the young. Perhaps our ever-aging population can best benefit from the value of weightlifting as it can help improve quality and quantity of life. Being able to have the strength to take care of yourself is vital for independence, especially in later years.

Be proactive and take care of yourself now. Don’t wait until your health fails you. You are never too old, however, to reap the benefits from weightlifting.

Scot E. Long, MSS, CSCS, is an exercise physiologist. He also is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi and a professor at Mississippi College.

Morristown police officers exercise their power (lifting)

Two earn Chief’s Medals for finishing in first place at different competitions

MORRISTOWN — “Snatching” or “dead-lifting” a barbell with hundreds of pounds aren’t prerequisites to becoming a police officer.

Nonetheless, those weightlifting skills proved valuable when two police officers flexed their muscles in two recent competitions.

Officer Chris Oakley, 23, and Detective Tyrone Jackson, 39, were recently recognized by the town department for snagging first place in separate meets.

Jackson, who’s been on the force 13 years, competed in the Police and Fire National Powerlifting Championships in Scranton, Pa., where he squatted 551 pounds, bench-pressed 424 pounds and dead-lifted 611 pounds. He finished first out of 13 contestants and won a gold medal.

“It’s a great feeling personally because you get to set goals,” he said. He added that fit police officers belie “the stereotype that all cops have, coffee and doughnuts.”

He has been regularly working out at the Power Lift fitness center at Florham Park with his trainer, Mike Tiano.

He said he is looking forward to other competitions in Miami and St. Louis.

Oakley finished first out of nine contestants in his weight class of 188 and 208 pounds, at a January Olympic Powerlifting competition at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Florham Park.

At the event, Oakley “snatched,” or held above his head, 122 kilograms, or 276 pounds, for three seconds.

In addition, Oakley lifted 341 pounds as part of the “clean and jerk,” in which a contestant lifts a barbell from the floor (clean) and then lifts it above his/her head (jerk).
“It was a very good meet,” said Oakley, who’s been with the department for three years.

Chief Peter Demnitz, who gave the Chief’s Medal to both officers, described them as “two of the most physically fit in the state, if not in the country.”

Demnitz stressed the importance of physical fitness, believing that it not only helps his 60-member police force stay in optimal shape, but helps them do a better job.

Physically fit officers, he said, are “more confident” and are less likely to use excessive force. They also tend to use fewer sick days or leaves of absence for injuries suffered in the line of duty.

An article in The Police Chief magazine lends credence to Demnitz’s points.

In a recent issue, an article stated that fit police officers perform their various job functions better and experienced less stress.

“Agencies stand to benefit in terms of efficiency as well as fiscally,” according to the article. “Officers are less likely to be injured or retire on disability, thus reducing the costs of disability payments and the hiring and training of new employees.”

No doughnuts for these Morristown cops

The bad guys definitely won’t want to mess with Morristown Police Detective Tyrone Jackson and Officer Chris Oakley.

Each has won recent weightlifting competitions, reports The Daily Record.Tyrone, who dead-lifted 611 pounds en route to victory against police and firefighters at an event in Scranton, Pa., told the paper:

“It’s a great feeling personally because you get to set goals…” He added that fit police officers belie “the stereotype that all cops have, coffee and doughnuts.”

According to Police Chief Pete Demnitz, bodybuilding builds confidence. He told the paper that physically fit officers are less prone to using excessive force, take fewer sick days and experience fewer injuries on the beat.

Hugh Ross supports Power Lifting Federation

Hugh Ross supports Power Lifting Federation

Former Guyana power lifting champion turned bodybuilder Hugh Arlington Ross has made a timely donation of power lifting apparel to the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation (GAPLF).

Ross, who also dominated the power lifting arena in the United States and resigned as the USPF National Overall Masters Champion and best lifter back in 2000 said he was aware that the GAPLF was hosting the regional championships in April next year and felt the need to assist the federation.

Included in the 12 pieces sent are four blast shirts and eight squat/dead lift suits in assorted sizes ranging from 165 to 198 pounds.

Making the presentation on behalf of Ross to president of the GAPLF Peter Green was Dexter Garnette.
Green, just re-elected for his second one-year term at the helm of the sport, said the federation is very grateful to Ross for the  “significant gesture” by Guyana’s most famous body builder and former power lifter.

“I trust that that other overseas-based Guyanese and former lifters will be encouraged and motivated by Ross’s donation and will chip in also to help the less fortunate lifters in any tangible way to offset the high cost of equipment and  gear.”
Green said that the federation is working towards procuring new and approved weight sets (squat and bench press) and assistance in that regard would be welcomed.
