On a health kick

PLYMOUTH — The owners of the new Cape Cod Nutrition Corner at Colony Place have tried just about every one of the products they sell.

For Mike Craven and Russ Kleekamp, it’s important that their customers receive the best nutritional products for meeting their goals.

“Pretty much everything we’ll sell I’ve tried before,” Kleekamp said. “It’s a wide variety of products,” he said.

For Craven that includes supplements, wheat shakes, multivitamins and other kinds of nutritional products they’ll sell when the store at 221 Colony Place, next to PetCo, opens this Saturday, June 20. A grand opening celebration will also be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday, June 27, with special appearances by fitness experts.

Craven and Kleekamp met about four years ago at the gym where they both work out. The two men from Sandwich decided to team up to buy real estate, and while looking for other business opportunities, they decided to open a Cape Cod Nutrition Corner in Plymouth.

Their friend opened a Cape Cod Nutrition Corner in Hyannis 12 years ago and in just a few years was able to build a new store from the ground up. When he decided to expand the business further, he convinced Craven and Kleekamp to team up.

It didn’t take too much convincing.

“Every year he’s seen progressive growth to the point where he built a whole new store,” Kleekamp said.

Plymouth was chosen as a good fit from a business standpoint because it’s a growing area where Cape Cod Nutrition Corner can fill a void.

Craven studied exercise science and cardiac rehabilitation in college and worked for three years as a fitness director. He played soccer in high school and remains active.

“I’ve always been into fitness and nutrition,” he said.

Kleekamp works full-time as an environmental engineer, but stays in shape with the right foods and right supplements. He has run marathons and competed in bodybuilding competitions among other kinds of fitness events.

“I’ve always stayed active,” he said.

Along the way, as he plans to do with customers when he works at the store, he started offering advice to friends.

“I got involved in helping people with their diets,” he said.

Good nutrition benefits everyone, Craven and Kleekamp believe, so they will offer supplements that aid seniors, diabetics, athletes and other customers. Some people might be worried about joint care, while others may be in need of antioxidants.

Their manager, Dave Lifeford, has a degree in nutrition and, like Kleekamp, is into bodybuilding.

Cape Cod Nutrition Corner at 221 Colony Place will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. The store’s phone number is 508-591-8555.

COUNTRY MUSIC STAR AARON TIPPIN LAUNCHES LIFESTYLE CAMPAIGN AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT Aaron Tippin Nutrition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Top40 Charts/ Music City News Media & Marketing) - Award-winning, platinum-selling recording artist, songwriter and producer, Aaron Tippin, announced today the launch of his own lifestyle initiative and the introduction of his personal line of nutritional supplements, Aaron Tippin Nutrition (ATN).

Tippin who made the transition from the center of the bodybuilding arena to center stage in the country music industry nearly two decades ago, has added a new lifestyle product to his weighty list of ‘Can-Do’s.’

In his mid 20’s, Aaron Tippin was a competitive bodybuilder and the regimen became a motivating catalyst; he’s been a fitness buff ever since and now has launched a ‘way-of-life’ program.

‘I was a fanatic about bodybuilding; it was an obsession that drove me,” Aaron introduces. “Over the year’s, the health and fitness aspect (and how I felt each day) transformed the obsession into an everyday way of life-a lifestyle.’

The ATN campaign and corresponding products have been created to meet the needs and desires of all-for those who wish to maintain their overall well-being, the Baby Boomers who wish to remain forever young, and those who wish to make an absolute commitment to change-to lose some weight and get into shape.

‘You know, over my 20-year music career, folks are always asking me about how I stay in shape,’ Aaron said. ‘Exercising and staying active is just our way of life, at home and on the road, and with, my wife, Thea’s, help, I’ve learned to make better food choices and eat right. This is something (ATN) that we’ve wanted to do for a very long time.’

‘Our primary motivation is to promote healthy changes to enhance your life, and your lifestyle, make it a family affair, and have fun at it,’ said Thea Tippin who is an integral pillar behind the premise and foundation of the Tippin family and the ATN lifestyle program.

‘This is a proactive lifestyle campaign that we hope will encourage everyone to take forward-moving measures to maintain and increase their health and vitality-and the way they live overall. That includes changing the way you think, becoming more active and taking nutritional supplements to help you along the way,’ Mrs. Tippin added.

With the primary focus being on the complex relationships that exist between nutrients and the latest technological advancements in nutrition therapies, each and every ATN product has been developed with care and the human body in mind. ‘Offering a quality product is an A-Number-1 priority for us,’ Aaron states. ‘We’ve teamed with a proven manufacturer of nutritional supplements-one that I can firmly put my stamp of approval on. Thea and I have been taking our own products for more than six months now, so we can speak of the benefits from personal experience.’

The ATN line of nutritional supplements lend themselves to all areas including heart, mind, bone and joint; special concentrations such as energy, cholesterol, detoxification and stress management; as well as a daily multivitamin to support over all body balance. ATN products are developed with natural, raw materials and are guaranteed to contain no artificial additives (such as flavorings, preservatives, colors, sweeteners or other foreign agents).

The primary nutritional supplements now available under the new Aaron Tippin Nutrition line of products include:

Acai Energy Diet-an unequalled product created to increase metabolism and promote the fastest possible fat-loss, muscle-sparing results. Acai Energy Diet helps the body maximize its fat burning capacity while providing increased energy levels. ‘This is a great supplement to any diet and exercise program. Acai Energy Diet can help curb your appetite and will give you the energy boost you need when you’re feeling a little sluggish.’

Acai 4 Cleanse-especially formulated for Aaron Tippin Nutrition, Acai 4 Cleanse is a cleansing detoxification supplement to help promote a healthy body and the natural cleansing detoxifying process. The ingredients help protect and promote optimal health at the cellular level. ‘If the body plumbing is not working properly, toxins build up and drag your energy and health down. Acai 4 Cleanse will help you get up and get with it!’

Carb-Buster-is an all-natural nutritional supplement derived from the white kidney bean. It slows down the digestion of starch (inhibiting alpha-amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starch) thereby becoming more absorbent by the body. ‘As a bonus, Carb-Buster can help you control and balance blood sugar levels.’

Daily Defense Anti-Aging Formula-was designed to provide precursor nutrients to help boost the body’s natural (HGH) levels-an element key in supporting the anti-aging process. ‘We’ve studied up on this…by increasing the HGH levels in your body, many of the signs and effects of aging (like low energy levels, memory loss, thinning hair, reduced skin elasticity, etc.) can be slowed, and we’re all for that!’

Daily Defense Greens-in tablet form is a balancing formula to support and maintain wellness overall. Organically grown, Daily Defense Greens contains green vegetables, sprouted grains, grasses, fibrous herbs, anti-oxidants and MSM (Methylsulfonymethane). Daily Defense Greens will help increase energy levels and relieve the body from fatigue and stress. ‘This has the nutritional benefits of 2 lbs. of fresh vegetables! We all know what mom has said for years about eating your vegetables! Greens are just good for you.’

Keeping the pace with Americans’ ever-changing way of life, their hunger for perfection and natural instinct to ‘be the best they can be,’ ATN will faithfully introduce contemporary supplements-including a men and women’s daily multivitamin which will be available in the coming months.

‘It’s our goal to help folks ‘get with it and stick with it,’ or just encourage them to start living better so they can continue to pursue all the things they enjoy and ‘live’ longer. It’s as simple or as hard as you want to make it. If you make the decision about ‘you,’ it’s a commitment ‘you’ can make for a lifetime and ATN’s motto is ‘living well…for the time of your life!’ There’s no better time to start than right now,’ Aaron concluded.

The 50-year-old father of three remains steadfast in his commitment to his career, his family, and his lifestyle. A man who ’stands for something’ and whose music ’speaks’ to country music fans worldwide, with 5 Million records sold, Aaron Tippin has become one of the most recognizable and influential voices in our country and others. Aaron Tippin has 13 recorded CD’s to his name and more than 30 charted singles (including the No. 1 singles “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong with the Radio,” “That’s as Close As I’ll Get To Loving You” and “Kiss This”). His musical messages are plain and simple-touting the struggles and triumphs of the working class-and it is his music that has enabled him a personal kinship with country music listeners across the globe. Aaron Tippin Nutrition is yet another avenue to reach one and all to make a difference in their lives.

Brawl Nutrition Fights Its Way Into The MMA Supplement Market

Atlanta based Brawl Nutrition, a sports nutrition company that designs and markets supplements to mixed martial art athletes, is calling for industry CEOs to put their muscle where their marketing is. Greg Latora, Brawl Nutrition’s President and CEO, is so confident in the company’s product line, that he is willing to step into the ring if challenged by any competing CEO. “Just as the Gracie family validated the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by their performance in the ring, I am willing to do the same for Brawl Nutrition’s line of products”, says Mr. Latora.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 1, 2009 — In a year when many corporate leaders are tucking their heads in the sand, one CEO has put out a challenge his competitors. Latora. While the sports nutrition industry is saturated with over-priced, over-marketed products, Brawl Nutrition has carved out a specific niche for the rapidly growing sports of mixed martial arts. Chris Lusk, Brawl Nutrition’s Marketing Director states, “We are sick of watching bodybuilding supplement companies take their tired, ineffective product lines and market them to MMA fighters. Many of these supplements decrease flexibility and stamina which are critical to fighter’s performance.” Mr. Lusk added, “Brawl Nutrition offers a product line that is formulated specifically for fighters, not one-dimensional weightlifters. Whether our products are used individually or in a stack, our line compliments a fighter’s unique physique, and training regime.” Brawl Nutrition products and merchandise can be purchased through their website, www.brawlnutrition.com, or in local fighting facilities.

In addition, Brawl has launched two subsidiary websites: Girls Of Brawl (www.girlsofbrawl.com) and Team Brawl (www.team-brawl.com) that give fighters, models, trainers, and gyms the opportunity to showcase their talents for sponsorship, promotional, and general business opportunities. Dom Briomonte, Brawl Nutrition’s Director of Industry Relations states, “MMA, being relatively new to mainstream America, is at a young and vulnerable stage right now. As ambassadors of this sport, we are striving to build a community that protects and supports the interests of its participants. By sharing resources within our network of partners, affiliate companies, and schools, we can help our members reach new heights, both personal and professional.”

Amazing Fat-Burner CelluTherm Makes Beach Bodies a Reality

With the arrival of summertime, more consumers are flocking to beaches and sporting toned beach bodies thanks to newer ground-breaking cellulite creams like CelluTherm. According to medical experts, a large majority of society suffers from the appearances of abnormal fatty deposits (cellulite). But, newer cellulite creams like CelluTherm harness the power of science, successfully breaking down fat cells at their source and preventing their reformation; eliminating cellulite once and for all.

Manalapan, NJ (PRWEB) June 30, 2009 — The arrival of summertime does flaunt an array of beachgoers that all want to look and feel their best. However, at the same time -according to leading medical experts - cellulite affects more than, or at least, 90% of all people on the planet. A newer breakthrough cellulite cream, CelluTherm (created by SkinCura Labs, a leading cosmeceutical company; distributed online by Healthwebshopping.com), aims to minimize cellulite woes of consumers by offering a revolutionary cellulite-burning cream that is simply massaged into the targeted areas of the body, and has been proven to noticeably reduce the appearances of cellulite in just a few short weeks.

The secret of CelluTherm’s success is found in the proprietary ingredient complex contained within. CelluTherm cellulite cream harnesses the power of science by incorporating clinically-proven ingredients that target hard-to-burn clumps of cellulite fat and prevent them from reforming. After a few weeks of usage, consumers will see visible signs of cellulite reduction.

CelluTherm is able to offer such fantastic results by using ingredients like Adiposlim–a revolutionary and patented ingredient that has been proven in lab and clinical testing to significantly improve the appearance of cellulite by actually shrinking the fat cells. CelluTherm also uses other proven fat-burners like Adipoless–another patented ingredient that inhibits newer shrunken fat cells from reforming into cellulite.

According to SkinCura Labs spokesperson, Georgina Reeves, people are using cellulite cream products like CelluTherm to more easily achieve those toned beach bodies that they desire in shorter amounts of time, maximizing workout efforts with added, more noticeable results.

“Ask anybody who has cellulite - and that is trying to get rid of it - and they will all tell you that it can be one great big nuisance to rid your body of,” Reeves says.

Reeves explains that the benefits of CelluTherm are multiple for consumers, “This is where the power of clinically-proven CelluTherm comes into the picture. More people are using our fantastic cellulite cream because it’s easy to use, it’s affordable, and it’s proven to attack cellulite at its source, preventing it from ever coming back. Indeed, that beach body that you so desire can be more easily attained using CelluTherm to combat cellulite pockets.”

CelluTherm cellulite cream is applied one or two times per day to the targeted areas of the body that show cellulite formations. A marble-sized amount is lightly massaged into the skin for 45 seconds until fully absorbed. CelluTherm typically shows noticeable results for most people within the first two to four weeks of daily application. Results are enhanced when CelluTherm is used in conjunction with proper diet and daily exercise.

Cytosport Muscle Milk Referred to FDA and FTC for Ad Claims Following Challenge by Nestle USA

The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus has referred advertising claims made by CytoSport Beverage Company for its Muscle Milk product to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for further review, after CytoSport declined to participate in an NAD inquiry.

NAD, the advertising industry’s self-regulatory forum, requested that CytoSport providesubstantiation for certain advertising claims, following a challenge by Nestle USA.

The challenger held that Muscle Milk, marketed as a “High Protein Chocolate Milk Shake” is a dietary supplement that is sold in grocery and convenience stores alongside milk andother consumer beverages. The challenger maintained that the claim “Muscle Milk” is falseand misleading because it claims that the product contains actual milk when it does not andthat consumers are likely to be misled into thinking that they are buying a flavored orsupplemented milk product, when in fact, the product is a water-based dietary supplement.

Adulterated Hi-Tech Stamina-Rx Recalled

Supplement company Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals is recalling all lots of its Stamina-Rx product as a result of recent testing by the FDA that determined the presence of undeclared benzamidenafil, a prescription drug used for treating ED (erectile dysfunction).

Although Stamina-Rx was marketed as a dietary supplement, under DSHEA, the presence of a prescription drug makes them adulterated products.

In addition, the FDA sent a recent letter to Hi-Tech informing Hi-Tech that the marketing of the products online and in product labeling positioned the products as unapproved new drugs.

Seems the FDA has a number of supplement companies on their radar screens which in the long run could turn out to be a positive for the dietary supplement industry if improved quality controls and safety regulations become more commonplace.

Looking for Pure Acai Berry? You Better Study the Label Carefully

While you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can judge an Acai supplement by its label. A new Acai report helps consumers understand how to read an Acai label

Consumers looking to buy pure Acai Berry supplements are being advised to study the label of the Acai supplement carefully. PowerSupplements.Com today released an Acai Special Report that helps consumers understand how to read the terminology on an Acai berry supplement to better understand the quality of the Acai supplement.

The Acai berry grows in the Acai Palm trees of the Amazon Rainforest. The Acai Berry is very high in antioxidants, healthy Omega fats, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Acai gained international recognition as one of the highest antioxidant fruits in the world after Dr. Perricone named the Acai berry as the #1 Superfood on the Oprah Winfrey show. Acai has been featured on the Today Show, CBS Early Show, Wall Street Jounal and the New York Times.

While there are hundreds of Acai berry supplements on the market, they vary greatly in quality and effectiveness. PowerSupplements.Com advises consumers to study the labels of Acai supplements carefully to understand exactly what they are buying.

“Just about every company claims to have a pure Acai berry product – the sad fact is that most of the time this claim is untrue. The best thing a smart consumer can do is to carefully study the label for any acai supplement” states Bob Peters, Director of Communications for PowerSupplements.Com . “If you see terms like freeze dried, Organic and no other ingredients listed (just the Acai) – you know you are getting pure Acai berries and that it will be effective.”

The special report by PowerSupplements.Com advises consumers to look for these elements on the label of any Acai supplement they are looking to try:

  • Freeze dried Acai
  • 100% Organic Acai
  • No fillers and no flowing agents
  • No proprietary ingredient lists
  • No other listed ingredients – just pure Acai
  • Money Back Guarantee and Consumer Rights Guarantee

PowerSupplements.Com advises consumers NOT to buy Acai products with these elements on their label:

4:1 Acai Extract
Spray Dried Acai
Non-Organic
Proprietary Ingredient List
Magnesium Stearate, Silica, Rice, Malodextrin
Acai blends
Acai seeds (which have little nutritional value)

“If consumers really study the Supplement Facts panel on any Acai product, they can really learn a great deal. When it comes to Acai, less is really more. You want a product that has been processed as little as possible. In a way, the more you add to an Acai supplement, the less effective it becomes” states Peters.

PowerSupplements.Com recommends that people interested in the health benefits of the Acai Berry buy Perfect Acai. The Perfect Acai brand is made with 100% pure freeze dried Organic Acai. The acai berries are frozen within 18 hours of being picked to ensure they have full nutritional value. In addition, the Perfect Acai Consumer Bill of Rights guarantees that consumers who purchase the Perfect Acai will get 100% pure freeze dried Acai and never be auto billed, auto shipped or have any membership they need to cancel.

About Power Supplements, LLC:

Power Supplements, LLC develops nutritional supplements based on science and is the inventor of the Perfect Acai line of supplements. The Perfect Acai product line has become the standard by which other Acai supplements are judged. Perfect Acai is made with 100% Freeze Dried Organic Acai – with no fillers, flowing agents, malodextrin or Acai seeds.

Acai Berry Scams Exposed by New Consumer WatchDog Blog

Supplement Secrets Exposed Blog will inform consumers of acai berry scams and other dishonest supplement marketing practices

The Supplements Secrets Exposed Blog released a new article today warning consumers about various Acai Berry Scams involving fake endorsements from Oprah and Rachael Ray. Any company claiming to have an Acai Berry product endorsed by Oprah, Dr. Oz or Rachel Ray is simply misleading the public.

The Acai berry has gained international recognition as one of the highest antioxidant fruits in the world. Dr. Perricone named the Acai berry as the #1 Superfood on the Oprah Winfrey show. Acai has been featured on the Today Shows CBS Early Show, Wall Street Jounal and the New York Times. The Acai berry grows in the Acai Palm trees of the Amazon Rainforest. The Acai Berry is very high in antioxidants, healthy Omega fats, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. While other foods and fruits may be high in certain key nutrients, what makes Acai the number one superfood is its complete nutritional profile.

“Once again we are seeing an increase in the number of emails and advertisements that are implying a connection between Oprah, Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray and a specific Acai supplement. The absolute truth is that Oprah, Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray have never endorsed any specific acai berry supplement” states Bob Peters, Director of Communications for PowerSupplements.Com . “Consumers need to understand that there are some very dishonest companies out there that will pretty much stop at nothing to get you to buy their ineffective supplements.”

The new Blog – Supplement Secrets Exposed – was created to inform consumers of all the dirty little tricks and secrets used by less reputable supplement manufacturers. The blog has a whole section dedicated to Acai Berry Scams and how to avoid them. One of their most popular articles is – “Here’s a secret- Oprah Did NOT Endorse Any Acai Product!”

Peters concludes, “Our new blog is not making us any friends in the supplement industry – but we are fine with that. We just want consumers to know what goes on in this industry so they can make informed and educated decisions.”

Supplement Secrets Exposed is a new blog from Power Supplements that promises to terrify the supplement industry. The supplement industry has a lot of dirty little secrets and Supplement Secrets Exposed will reveal them all.

Fast weight loss and bikini bodies - myth or miracle?

Even though the official start of summer is not until June 21st; for most it started once the warm weather hit us like a wake up call that bathing-suit season was here! At this point many start to panic and run to the health food store looking for the latest weight-loss product to help them lose pounds quick. To belay their fears about relying on such products, many manufacturers advertise their supplements are “all natural” or “safe and effective”. Even the slow economy has not had a negative impact on the sales of weight loss products. Business journals are reporting that sales on supplements continue to rise.

Is this trendy path to fast weight loss and the perfect bikini body in a few short weeks realistic? Is it even safe? Many products make outrageous claims of 10 - 20 pounds dropped in as little as 2 or 3 weeks. Astonishingly, their promises are then followed up with amazing photos and testimonials. Caveat emptor! In the fine print are often statements like, “results not typical” or “this statement has not been evaluated by the FDA”. This means that while the featured pictures and testimonials show miraculous results, this is generally not what most consumers will experience. Furthermore, there are, most likely, no studies to support such claims.

So is the fast track to a bikini body a myth or miracle? The short answer is both. Many will experience rapid weight loss with popular supplements, others will have no results, or possibly even negative effects. There are a few key ingredients to be aware of:

  • Guarana: An herb native to South America that is high in naturally occurring caffeine. While it provides an immediate burst of energy, it is temporary, and can be harmful when used long term. Like other caffeine containing plants, it can cause nervousness, sleeplessness, increased heart rate and has addictive properties. The herb is part of native South American herbal medicine, and should be used judicially with recommendation and supervision by a Natural Health Professional or Master Herbalist.
  • Ma huang: Also comes in the form of ephedra. High doses are associated with heart palpitations and shortness of breath. (See this medical review for more info). The herb ma huang is part of the Chinese medicine’s pharmacopoeia and has much value in Chinese medicine. As such, see an OMD or LAc for proper use of this herb.
  • Kola nut: (Not to be confused with gotu kola) Another herb with naturally occurring caffeine. Caffeine may initially help raise the metabolism; but regular cardiovascular exercise produces the same result, and is a much safer alternative.

As with all fad dieting and magic formulas, the weight loss often comes back as soon as the diet is stopped or the supplement is discontinued. The ugly truth is that effective, permanent weight loss is the result of dedication and perseverance. There is no magic formula. The plan is simple: eat fresh, whole foods, eliminate processed and high sugar foods, and finally find some form of regular exercise which you enjoy. The particular diet and form of exercise is really a matter of individual preference.

From a holistic perspective, weight gain is a sign of imbalance in the body. This imbalance is often due to a poor diet or sedentary lifestyle, but there are pathological issues that can effect the body’s natural rhythm as well. Hormonal imbalances are one example. Many have tried exercise and diet on their own with little to no success, and then either given up or turned to weight loss supplements and their false promises. Anyone who wants to find their healthy weight and is struggling should seek the advice of a doctor, nutritionist, or other natural health professional.

USA Track to help athletes track supplements

USA Track and Field entered a partnership Tuesday with a company that helps athletes find out if supplements they’re thinking about taking are free of banned substances.

USATF chief executive Doug Logan announced the deal with the National Center for Drug Free Sport, saying it was a way for athletes “to navigate the confounding labyrinth that is the multi-zillion dollar industry of ‘legal’ supplements.”

Earlier this year, Logan delivered a rebuke of supplement makers, saying they’ve been complicit in helping ruin a sport filled with doping scandals over the years.

He backed it up by announcing the deal with a company that also has agreements with the NCAA, Major League Baseball, the NFL, and the PGA Tour.

A common excuse when an athlete tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs is to say they used a supplement that must have been tainted. The supplement industry has largely steered clear of federal regulations, and Logan, in his speech in January, said it was all because of a long-term, calculated lobbying effort in Washington.

In his blog Tuesday, Logan said the only way an athlete can really know if he’s clean is by competing supplement-free.

“But if an athlete does use supplements, or is considering using them, this new resource will help them make a more informed decision about the benefits and pitfalls of a given product,” he wrote.

USATF members can log on to the Web site’s Resource Exchange Center and get information about supplements they’re thinking about taking.

Logan said the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency already has a hotline for athletes in its testing pool to ask about banned substances. So while the agreement may not be a huge added benefit for Olympic-caliber athletes, the new program will enable any USATF member — juniors, seniors, recreational athletes — to use the Drug Free Sport service.

Reality check on supplements, remedies

Americans increasingly turn to alternative medicine. But does it really help?

Ten years and $2.5 billion in research have found no cures from alternative medicine. Yet these mostly unproven treatments are now mainstream and used by more than a third of all Americans. A few basics about herbal and other supplements and their safety and effectiveness.

Since vitamins and herbal pills are sold at the drugstore, doesn’t that mean they’re safe and government approved?
Not necessarily. These are “dietary supplements” and the law doesn’t require them to go through rigorous testing to prove they are safe or even that they work. The government has rules saying ingredients must match what’s on the label, but it doesn’t vouch for their accuracy.

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act adopted in 1994 says the Food and Drug Administration can go after a product when a problem comes to light — rather than having the manufacturer prove it is safe and effective beforehand, as is required of pharmaceuticals.

Haven’t many of these remedies been taken for years the world over, especially in China? Aren’t these natural products better for you than chemicals made in a big pharmaceutical company lab?
Roughly a quarter of FDA-approved drugs are made from plants. These have been tested for safety and effectiveness, and are sold in standard doses.

But herbal supplements contain varying amounts depending on the brand, and some natural ingredients can be harmful. Some interfere with other medicines and even things like birth control pills. Many natural remedies have had little rigorous testing to determine whether they work.

If millions of people take them and say they improve their health, isn’t that an indication they work?
Some might do some good. But the mind-body connection is so powerful that a strong belief that you feel better actually can help counter pain and other physical problems. This “placebo effect” can make people think a pill is helping when their mind is really doing the work.

I don’t always eat right. Aren’t vitamin pills a good idea?
Doctors say Americans generally get all the nutrients they need from their diet. Vitamins from a pill are not the same as those from food and may not provide the same health benefits. Too much of some vitamins can be harmful.

What happens if a supplement makes someone sick?
The FDA can ask the manufacturer to recall the product if there are enough reports of illness or serious side effects. Since last year, supplement makers have been required to tell FDA of serious problems reported by consumers and doctors. Before that, potential dangers surfaced mostly through complaints to doctors or emergency room visits. That’s how the dangers of the herbal stimulant ephedra, used as a diet pill, became known. It was blamed for dozens of heart attacks, strokes and deaths, and the FDA banned its use in 2004.

Consumers can report an illness they think may be linked to a supplement by calling 1-800-FDA-1088 or by visiting http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/how.htm. The government says you should report any serious problem even if you are not sure the product was the cause or you did not see a doctor.

What to know before buying supplements

The federal Food and Drug Administration does not analyze the content of dietary supplements, which do not need proof of safety or effectiveness before they go on sale. Here are tips from the government on their use:

_Don’t self-diagnose a health condition or substitute a supplement for medicine.

_Ask your doctor before taking a supplement, especially if you are pregnant, taking other medicines or are having surgery soon.

_Request proof from the manufacturer or distributor to back up any claims.

_Ask the seller or manufacturer for information on tests showing safety or effectiveness of ingredients, and whether consumers have complained of adverse events.

_Look for “seals of approval” from independent groups that have standards to help ensure the product was properly made, contains what the label says, and is free of contaminants. These groups include Consumerlab.com, NSF and the U.S. Pharmacopeia.

Hydroxycut hazard

The popular bodybuilding and weight-loss supplement has been linked to liver damage, but it’s uncertain how many have suffered harm.

It was a case that might have puzzled TV’s acerbic Dr. House.

A 33-year-old woman with dark urine and yellowish skin complained of profound fatigue when she showed up at the emergency room at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Lab tests showed she had acute liver inflammation.

Joseph Lim, a liver specialist at Yale, was on the case. He noted that the woman had been taking Hydroxycut supplements for weight loss for two weeks. Several reports in the medical literature had linked Hydroxycut (which is used for both bodybuilding and weight loss) to liver damage.

When his patient stopped taking the popular supplement, she improved, leading Lim to finger the product.

He has been far from the only critic. On May 1, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to stop taking Hydroxycut, which had been linked to liver damage and jaundice in 23 case reports received by the agency.

These complaints include one liver transplant and one fatality, a 19-year-old male from the southwestern United States, the FDA said.

Iovate Health Sciences, the Ontario-based manufacturer, voluntarily recalled 14 Hydroxycut products (two, Hoodia and Hydroxycut Cleanse, were not recalled because they contain different ingredients).

An Iovate spokeswoman referred a reporter to a statement on the company’s Web site, which said that few adverse reports had surfaced compared to the numbers of Hydroxycut users, and that the company issued the recall from “an abundance of caution.”

Lim said he supported the FDA’s warning because the supplements are widely used and have undergone far less scrutiny than many people realize.

Dietary supplements are not tested by the FDA for safety or efficacy. The FDA relies on consumers, doctors, or manufacturers to alert them to health issues, but this can take time.

An estimated 15 percent of the U.S. population use over-the-counter weight-loss supplements, and Hydroxycut marketing declares it to be “America’s No. 1 selling weight-loss supplement” in the United States.

The company sold more than nine million bottles of Hydroxycut in 2008, executives told the FDA.

Yet it remains unclear how many people Hydroxycut may have injured or even which of its ingredients are dangerous.

A visit to a local drug store showed that while Hydroxycut had been pulled from the shelves, many of its ingredients were widely available in other products still for sale. The FDA’s Vasilios Frankos, director of the Division of Dietary Supplements Program, said last month that the agency was investigating those ingredients and other products that contain them.

The Hydroxycut ingredient that shares the product’s name, hydroxycitric acid or HCA, has a long history. Drugmaker Hoffmann-La Roche tried to turn HCA into a weight-loss drug in the mid-1970s, but abandoned the research even before human testing because of toxicities in animals, said company spokesperson Darien Wilson. HCA is derived from the rind of a pumpkinlike tropical fruit that grows on the Garcinia cambogia tree.

Besides HCA, Lim said, two other ingredients could be toxic: the mineral chromium and Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. When ingested, both have been implicated in the medical literature as potential liver toxins.

So just recalling Hydroxycut hasn’t fully protected the public, said Ano Lobb, an independent public health researcher for academic, nonprofit, and government entities.

“Hydroxycut is dangerous, so [consumers] look down the shelf and grab another weight-loss supplement,” said Lobb, who a few weeks before the FDA’s announcement published an article about the links between Hydroxycut and liver damage. “The message should be that [weight-loss and bodybuilding] supplements are some of the most dangerous.”

Lobb became interested in Hydroxycut after seeing some of its ubiquitous advertisements featuring a formerly chubby, currently ripped medical doctor. “They kept citing clinical evidence that the product works. I wanted to know what that evidence was,” Lobb said.

Hydroxycut packaging claims it increases energy and burns calories with “clinically proven” ingredients. Lobb found that the weight-loss studies yielded inconsistent results at best. “Besides the industry-funded studies, which should be viewed with some skepticism, they tended to be on animals,” he said.

“There should be more evidence out there before it goes to market,” Lobb added. Now, the burden “falls to the consumer.”

Considering the supplement’s popularity and the number of events reported, the FDA called the liver complications “relatively rare.”

However, most experts agree that adverse events are dramatically underreported. A doctor or consumer won’t always connect a supplement to a medical condition. And patients often fail to tell their doctors about supplement use.

Even then, the chances that a case will reach the FDA are slim. An FDA-commissioned study from 2001 found the FDA received only about 1 percent of supplement-related adverse-event reports.

The one Hydroxycut-related death cited by the FDA took two years to reach the agency. Such a delay isn’t unusual, said Linda Katz, the FDA’s interim chief medical officer for its Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

The FDA’s decision to warn against Hydroxycut was also prompted by four cases in the medical literature reporting that Hydroxycut had caused liver toxicity.

The case reports - Lim wrote the most recent - follow a similar course: a sudden illness, sometimes requiring hospitalization, in the weeks or months after starting Hydroxycut, followed by improvement after stopping the supplement.

But not all liver disease follows this pattern.

Philadelphia lawyer Jamie Sheller of Sheller P.C. represents several clients who believe Hydroxycut harmed them. A Toronto firm, Juroviesky & Ricci L.L.P., has also filed a class-action lawsuit against the makers of Hydroxycut.

One of Sheller’s clients, Stephen Snuffer, 59, a Mormon, was shocked to learn he had liver disease after a health insurance screening in December.

Hydroxycut had been part of Snuffer’s daily routine for five years.

An independent insurance agent and author who lives on his own mountain in Cool Ridge, W. Va., Snuffer had assumed anything sold at GNC was healthy. “I used it as a supplement to prevent me from being hungry,” he said. “I don’t have time to stop and eat on the road.”

Snuffer’s liver enzyme levels indicate liver damage, but are far from those generally associated with acute liver toxicity. Even so, they are high enough to make individual insurance too expensive.

If cases such as Snuffer’s can be attributed to Hydroxycut, the number of victims could rise substantially.

FDA regulators prompt Hydroxycut recall

Washington, May 3: Reflecting on the link between Hydroxycut weight loss products and the subsequent development of liver damage and other potentially life-threatening side effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to immediately stop using the products.

Health issues reported

The FDA announced today that fourteen Hydroxycut weight-loss products have been recalled by lovate Health Sciences USA Inc. According to Dr. Linda Katz, interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s food and nutrition division said the agency has received 23 reports of liver problems, including the death of a 19-year-old boy living in the Southwest.

Other symptoms reported are jaundice to liver failure. One person received a transplant and another is awaiting a new liver. The patients were otherwise healthy and their symptoms began after they started using Hydroxycut.

Some other health issues that have been reported include seizures, cardiovascular disorders and rhabdomyolysis (a kind of muscle damage). Ailments like jaundice, brown urine, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, stomach pain and loss of appetite have surfaced.

FDA’s warning

Consumers who have the products are urged to stop using them and to return them or ask for a refund.“The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products,” said Linda Katz.

The crux of the problem is that dietary supplements are not strictly regulated by the government as medicines. There is no stringent rule for manufacturers to prove to the FDA that their products are safe and effective before retailing. But in recent times regulators monitor the markets for signs of trouble, and alert the FDA when they learn of problems.

Linda stated, “Part of the problem is that the FDA looks at dietary supplements from a post-market perspective, and an isolated incident is often difficult to follow.”

Public health researcher Ano Lobb, who has studied Hydroxycut and other dietary supplements for Consumer Reports, said “You really have to be careful about dietary supplements, especially weight-loss pills. People believe that the FDA has verified that these products are at least safe and effective, and that’s really not the case. When you see fantastic claims _ that’s generally what they are.”

THE DIET DOCS: Get ready! We are here to help you get healthy

Everything I needed to know in life I learned from a Disney movie (with apologies to Robert Fulghum).

Maybe it’s because as a father of three, that’s all my wife and I ever get to watch. Or maybe it’s because they contain a lot of truth.

Our most recent viewing was Disney/Pixar’s “Wall-E,” the story of the sad, lonely robot left to clean up our world after we trashed it.

Besides the obvious “save the planet” warnings (take your stuff to the Wesselman Woods Recycling Center if you don’t have curbside recycling; Al Gore would be so proud), I found the futuristic depiction of the state of our health much more disturbing.

The movie shows a spaceship full of obese people floating on hovering recliners while they drink all their meals through a cup as their bones slowly disintegrate. Yikes! Really kind of bummed me out.

We are caught in a bit of a paradox.

Our country is in perhaps its worst physical condition ever. Sixty percent of adults are overweight or obese, as are 15 percent of our children.

Experts are predicting that by 2030, every adult in the United States may be overweight or obese.

The flip side is that recently there seems to be a bit of a dieting backlash. Is it because poor Oprah is back above 200 pounds, so none of us are allowed to diet anymore?

The health conditions worsened by obesity (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, etc.) are profound and life-altering. We can and must do something about it.

There has to be a common-sense middle ground. Extremism is not viable, and giving up is not an option.

We need something attainable and sustainable. We need a combination of exercise and nutrition that is flexible and can be utilized long after the fad diet du jour has fallen by the wayside.

In the coming months, Dr. Joe Klemczewski (a professional bodybuilder, nutritionist, and trainer to some of the top bodybuilders and fitness models in the world) and myself (a family physician board certified in family practice and geriatrics and a schlub who lost 60 pounds working with Dr. Joe) will be discussing a variety of topics regarding diet, nutrition, fitness and family medicine.

We will stress education and fun with tips that will last a lifetime. In the words of Stephen King from “The Shawshank Redemption,” are you going to “get busy living, or get busy dying”?

Get busy living, Tri-State! We’re here to help.

Evansville residents Dr. Scott Uloth and Dr. Joe Klemczewski are co-authors of “The Diet Docs’ Guide to Permanent Weight Loss: Secrets to Metabolic Transformation,” from Harvest House Publishers.

Ask Joe Weider: Jamming in the gym

Tip of the Week: It’s better to feel good than to look good. Yes, I said it.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have made a career of encouraging people to look their best. In fact, achieving a physical ideal has been a cornerstone of my life since I was a boy.

That being said, however, there is no point to having a primed physique, or much of anything else for that matter, if you don’t have the health to enjoy it. You know the expression, “Well at least I have my health.” Wise words.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen a fair number of athletes risk their health in order to achieve a goal, be it a better physique, a faster sprint or a farther hit. In the end, all we’re left with is our bodies — and when you get to my age, the condition of what’s underneath your skin becomes all the more important.

Take care of the interior of your body as you sculpt it, and you’ll achieve what I consider an ideal balance in your physical life.

Q: What are your thoughts when it comes to listening to music while working out? An old timer I know says it destroys concentration. At the gym where I train, they often play “light” music, which really kills my energy. I often ask them to change it, and when they do I feel my energy rise. Could this really be happening, or is it my imagination?

Joe: To answer your question, I’d have to say that whether or not one listens to music is a very personal thing. Back when I was a young gym rat, there was no such thing as music at a gym. Of course, that’s if you don’t include the “music” of the clanging of plates against one another as we lifted.

Of course, nowadays every gym that I know of plays music. Indeed, recent studies have shown that music can boost a workout. Researchers have found that music with a beat-per-minute range of 120 to 140 can help drive cardio workouts. Maybe not coincidentally, that is also the range at which the average adult’s heart beats during a cardio session.

Athletes in a variety of sports — from basketball to swimming to powerlifting — can often be seen rocking in their seats with a pair of headphones over their ears in the moments before a contest. Certainly they already know the power of music to affect performance.

If the gym where you train plays music that lulls you to sleep, I suggest getting yourself a personal audio player with good sound isolation so you can block out the gym’s ambient noise and listen to the music that inspires you most. They say “music soothes the savage breast,” which is great almost anytime, except when you’re working out.

Q: Should I be taking an amino acid supplement? I see so many of them on the shelves of the health-food stores, from BCAAs to individual aminos like arginine, glutamine and carnitine. I exercise five days a week and eat a healthy diet, so do I really need to buy amino acids?

Joe: Generally speaking, I would say that you don’t need to buy amino acids if, as you write, your diet is good. Of course, that also means that you are an omnivore. Meat contains all nine of the essential aminos, as opposed to vegetation, which does not. It’s believed that ancient cultures such as the Aztecs combined legumes with grains instinctively, as a way of achieving a complete amino acid profile in their diets.

Of course you could always see a registered dietician who could assess whether or not you may be deficient in a particular amino acid. Certain conditions, such as angina, pulmonary disease and even cold sores seem to have shown a positive response to treatment with certain aminos.

Nevertheless, if your diet contains even a minimal amount of animal protein, you probably don’t need to worry about supplementing with extra amino acids.

Joe Weider is acclaimed as “the father of modern bodybuilding” and the founder of the world’s leading fitness magazines, including Shape, Muscle and Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Fit Pregnancy, Hers, Golf for Seniors and others published worldwide in over 20 languages.
